CHAPTER 3 — "Lock Every Door." The Billionaire's Silent Trap Had Already Begun

The heavy click echoed through the mansion.

Click.

Then another.

Click.

Every exterior door automatically locked.

Every security gate on the eleven-acre estate slid shut.

Outside, motion lights illuminated the long driveway like a runway.

Inside...

Silence.

Vanessa looked down at her phone.

A notification flashed across the screen.

SECURITY MODE ACTIVATED
Owner Authorization: Marcus Webb

Her smile disappeared.

"What is this?"

The stranger stood so quickly that the coffee table shook.

"Did you do something?"

Vanessa frowned.

"No."

She immediately dialed Marcus.

Upstairs, Marcus watched his phone vibrate in his hand.

Vanessa Calling...

He declined it.

Five seconds later...

She called again.

He declined again.

For the first time that night, Marcus saw genuine fear in her eyes.

Not sadness.

Not confusion.

Fear.

The stranger walked to the front door and tried the handle.

Locked.

He tried again.

Nothing.

His calm expression cracked.

"I don't like this."

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"Marcus probably started a security update."

"At midnight?"

Neither of them spoke.

Both knew that excuse sounded ridiculous.

Meanwhile...

Rosa quietly carried Lily toward the kitchen.

She hadn't asked questions.

She hadn't interrupted.

But she had noticed three things.

The unfamiliar man.

The leather briefcase.

And Vanessa's unusually nervous voice.

Years of surviving an abusive husband had taught Rosa one lesson.

When your instincts whisper, don't wait for proof.

She knelt beside Lily.

"Sweetheart..."

"Can you stay here for just a minute?"

Lily nodded.

She hugged Bun.

"Okay."

Rosa walked toward the hallway.

She intended to find Marcus.

Instead...

Marcus stepped out of the shadows first.

Rosa nearly gasped.

"Mr. Webb..."

Marcus raised one finger.

"Quiet."

She immediately understood.

Something serious was happening.

He spoke softly.

"Take Lily to the pantry."

Rosa looked confused.

"The pantry?"

"It has the emergency exit."

Her eyes widened.

She had worked there for four years.

She never knew.

Marcus nodded.

"My grandfather built this house."

"He trusted storms less than people."

Rosa didn't ask another question.

She simply took Lily's hand and disappeared toward the kitchen.

Downstairs...

The stranger opened the briefcase again.

"We have to leave."

Vanessa whispered sharply,

"We can't."

"What if he's awake?"

"He isn't."

"Then why lock the house?"

Vanessa had no answer.

The stranger looked toward the staircase.

"We're being watched."

Vanessa laughed too loudly.

"Don't be paranoid."

But even she glanced upstairs.

Marcus stepped backward into darkness before either of them could see him.

His phone vibrated.

Security Chief Ethan Brooks

Marcus answered.

"I'm outside."

"How many?"

"Six officers."

"Unmarked vehicles."

Marcus looked downstairs.

"Nobody comes inside yet."

"You sure?"

"Very."

"I want them to believe they're still alone."

Ethan hesitated.

"You think this is bigger than cheating?"

Marcus watched the stranger remove several folders from the briefcase.

"Much bigger."

Ten minutes earlier...

Marcus would have confronted Vanessa immediately.

Now...

He wanted answers.

Every answer.

Without giving them time to invent lies.

The stranger suddenly pulled out a flash drive.

Small.

Silver.

He handed it to Vanessa.

"This contains every transfer."

She slipped it into her purse.

Marcus's heart pounded.

Transfer?

What transfer?

The stranger continued.

"Delete the backups tomorrow."

"No mistakes."

Vanessa nodded.

"I know."

Then she smiled.

"After the wedding..."

"...none of this will matter."

Marcus felt ice spread through his veins.

Wedding.

Again.

Everything depended on the wedding.

Not love.

Not marriage.

The paperwork.

Upstairs, Marcus quietly entered his bedroom.

He opened the hidden compartment beneath his desk.

Inside sat a black laptop.

Not connected to the company network.

Not connected to the internet.

Only one purpose.

Monitoring the estate's security cameras.

He typed his password.

Twenty-four camera feeds appeared.

Kitchen.

Garage.

Office.

Hallway.

Wine cellar.

Front gate.

Then...

His eyes stopped.

Camera 14.

His private office.

The recording wasn't live.

It showed archived footage from three nights earlier.

Marcus pressed play.

The timestamp read:

2:17 A.M.

The office door slowly opened.

Someone entered wearing a hood.

Gloves.

A baseball cap.

The face remained hidden.

The person walked directly to Marcus's wall safe.

No hesitation.

No searching.

As if they already knew the exact combination.

Marcus froze.

Only three people knew where that safe was.

Marcus.

His attorney.

And...

Vanessa.

The hooded figure entered the code.

The safe opened on the first attempt.

Inside were land deeds.

Corporate seals.

Original ownership certificates.

The intruder photographed everything.

Then carefully returned every document exactly as before.

Marcus's stomach turned.

They hadn't stolen anything.

Because stealing would have been discovered.

They had copied everything.

Suddenly...

The hood slipped slightly.

Only for a second.

Marcus leaned closer to the screen.

A single strand of long blonde hair escaped.

His heart sank.

"No..."

He replayed the clip.

Again.

Again.

Again.

There was no doubt.

It was Vanessa.

A soft voice interrupted him.

"Mr. Marcus?"

He turned.

Lily stood in the doorway holding Bun.

She looked sleepy.

"I had a bad dream."

Marcus knelt.

"What happened?"

She whispered,

"The mean man."

Marcus forced himself to smile.

"What mean man?"

"The one downstairs."

"Why is he here?"

Marcus gently brushed a curl away from her face.

"What makes you think he's mean?"

Lily looked toward the hallway before answering.

"Because..."

"...he's the same man who came when you were in New York."

Marcus stopped breathing.

"When?"

Lily counted carefully on her fingers.

"Lots of sleeps ago."

"He came."

"Miss Vanessa let him into your office."

Marcus felt the room spin.

He had been in New York negotiating a $400 million commercial project that week.

Only Vanessa had known his exact travel schedule.

He looked into Lily's innocent eyes.

Children rarely understand the importance of what they witness.

They simply tell the truth.

"Lily..."

"Did you tell anyone else?"

She shook her head.

"Miss Vanessa said it was our secret."

Marcus's voice became very quiet.

"And what did you say?"

Lily smiled proudly.

"I told Bun."

Marcus almost laughed.

Instead...

His eyes filled with tears.

Not because of betrayal.

Because a three-year-old had carried a secret she never should have been asked to keep.

He gently hugged her.

"You never have to keep grown-up secrets again."

Lily hugged him back.

"Okay."

At that exact moment...

A loud crash echoed from downstairs.

SMASH!

Glass exploded across the marble floor.

Marcus stood instantly.

His security monitor flashed red.

MOTION DETECTED — PRIVATE OFFICE

He looked at the live feed.

The stranger had disappeared from the living room.

Vanessa was standing alone.

And someone...

Had just broken into Marcus's office again.

But that was impossible.

The office was upstairs.

Marcus was standing only twenty feet away.

Unless...

May you like

There had been another person hiding inside the mansion all along.
