CHAPTER 5 — His Sister Stepped Out of the Shadows... Then the Billionaire Smiled for the First Time That Night

Marcus didn't move.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he finally understood.

For nearly two years, he had believed his life was falling apart one coincidence at a time.

It wasn't.

It had been engineered.

Every smile.

Every dinner.

Every wedding plan.

Every signed document.

Every carefully timed "accident."

Someone had been building a trap with the same patience Marcus used to build skyscrapers.

Only now did he see the architect.

His own sister.

Emily Webb.

Eight years earlier...

Emily had walked out of Webb Holdings after the reading of their father's will.

She never came back.

The newspapers claimed the siblings had argued over money.

The business channels reported a "family disagreement."

The truth was very different.

Marcus remembered every word of that day.

"I don't want Dad's company," Emily had shouted in the attorney's office.

"I want Dad."

Marcus had stood there in silence.

Still numb from the funeral.

Still trying to save thousands of employees from panic.

Their father had left Marcus control of the company because he had spent fifteen years learning the business from the ground up.

Emily had inherited nearly forty million dollars in cash, investments, and properties.

Marcus thought it was fair.

Emily thought she had been replaced.

That day, she left without saying goodbye.

Marcus called.

She never answered.

He wrote letters.

Every one came back unopened.

Eventually...

He stopped trying.

But he never stopped wondering.

Back in the hidden chamber...

Marcus listened as Emily spoke.

"You've all done well."

Her voice was calm.

Older.

Sharper than he remembered.

The stranger nodded.

"Marcus suspects Vanessa."

Emily smiled.

"Good."

"We wanted that."

Vanessa looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

Emily folded her arms.

"If Marcus thinks you're the only problem..."

"...he won't look beyond you."

The room fell silent.

The stranger frowned.

"So I've just been bait?"

Emily looked directly at him.

"No."

"You've been useful."

Marcus felt a chill.

This woman sounded nothing like the sister he grew up with.

She walked toward a large blueprint pinned to the wall.

It wasn't a building.

It was a timeline.

Hundreds of photographs.

Business meetings.

Airline tickets.

Wedding invitations.

Property acquisitions.

Charity events.

Security schedules.

Marcus's face appeared dozens of times.

Some photographs had obviously been taken without his knowledge.

Emily traced one finger across the board.

"Phase One."

She pointed to an old photograph of Vanessa meeting Marcus at a charity gala.

"Introduction."

"Completed."

Another photo.

Marcus proposing on a beach.

"Engagement."

"Completed."

Another.

Construction permits.

Corporate mergers.

Trust amendments.

"Asset consolidation."

"Completed."

Marcus stared in disbelief.

His life wasn't simply being observed.

It had been planned.

Like a military campaign.

The stranger chuckled.

"I still can't believe he fell in love."

Emily answered without emotion.

"Everyone has a weakness."

Vanessa smiled proudly.

"I was convincing."

Emily looked at her coldly.

"You were expensive."

The smile vanished from Vanessa's face.

"What?"

Emily stepped closer.

"You think this was your operation?"

Vanessa frowned.

"I've spent two years on this."

Emily's voice hardened.

"You spent two years doing exactly what I paid you to do."

Marcus's eyebrows lifted.

Paid?

Vanessa looked genuinely shocked.

"What are you talking about?"

Emily opened a folder.

Inside were bank transfers.

Wire receipts.

Fake consulting contracts.

Every payment led back to offshore accounts.

Emily smiled.

"You weren't my partner."

"You were my employee."

The room became deathly quiet.

Even the stranger looked surprised.

Vanessa slowly backed away.

"You told me we'd split everything."

Emily laughed.

"No."

"I told you what you needed to hear."

For the first time all night...

Marcus almost smiled.

Not because he was happy.

Because the cracks had finally begun appearing inside their own conspiracy.

People who betray together...

Rarely trust each other for long.

Vanessa's breathing became uneven.

"You lied to me."

Emily shrugged.

"You lied to Marcus."

"I considered that a qualification."

The stranger quietly picked up his briefcase.

"I don't like this."

Emily didn't even look at him.

"You don't have to."

"You've already been paid."

He narrowed his eyes.

"And after tomorrow?"

Emily smiled.

"There won't be a tomorrow for any of you."

The room froze.

Vanessa blinked.

"What does that mean?"

Emily calmly walked to another table.

There sat four passports.

Four plane tickets.

Only one passport was missing.

Vanessa counted them.

"One..."

"Two..."

"Three..."

She looked up.

"There are only three tickets."

Emily nodded.

"Exactly."

The stranger stepped backward.

"You planned to leave without us?"

Emily looked at both of them as if the answer were obvious.

"What did you expect?"

"Loyalty?"

Marcus watched something fascinating unfold.

The conspiracy was collapsing from the inside.

No one trusted anyone anymore.

Then...

Lily tugged gently on Marcus's sleeve.

"Mr. Marcus..."

He looked down.

"What is it?"

She pointed toward the blueprint wall.

"The bunny."

Marcus frowned.

"What bunny?"

"There."

High in the corner of the timeline was a tiny hand-drawn rabbit.

Pink crayon.

Crooked ears.

A child's drawing.

Marcus recognized it instantly.

Months earlier, Lily had drawn Bun while sitting in the kitchen.

The picture had disappeared.

Marcus never thought about it again.

Now...

It was pinned to Emily's investigation board.

Why?

Marcus looked closer.

The rabbit wasn't important.

What was behind it...

Was.

He carefully zoomed in using his phone's camera.

Hidden beneath the drawing was part of an old photograph.

Only one corner showed.

A hospital bracelet.

A newborn baby's tiny hand.

And one handwritten name.

LILY DELGADO.

Marcus's heart skipped a beat.

Why would Emily hide a picture of Lily's birth?

Why was a three-year-old little girl connected to a plan that had started years before Vanessa even met Marcus?

He turned toward Rosa, who had quietly entered the tunnel moments earlier.

She saw the photograph.

All the color drained from her face.

"No..."

she whispered.

Marcus looked at her.

"You've seen this before."

Rosa's hands began to tremble.

"I prayed..."

"...that no one would ever find it."

Marcus's voice became barely audible.

"Rosa..."

"What aren't you telling me?"

Tears filled Rosa's eyes.

She looked at Lily.

Then at Marcus.

Finally, she whispered the sentence that shattered everything Marcus believed about the little girl he had protected for years.

"Marcus..."

"...Lily didn't come into your life by accident."

Marcus felt the ground disappear beneath him.

"What does that mean?"

Rosa closed her eyes.

"I've been trying to tell you the truth for three years..."

"...but someone threatened to kill my daughter if I ever did."

Marcus's blood ran cold.

Before he could ask another question...

Emily slowly turned toward the tunnel.

She hadn't seen Marcus.

She hadn't seen Rosa.

But she had heard one voice.

Lily's.

Emily smiled.

Then said calmly,

"Find the child."

Marcus's eyes widened.

The stranger immediately reached into his jacket.

Not for a phone.

Not for keys.

For a handgun fitted with a suppressor.

Marcus realized, with horrifying clarity, that this had never been just a financial scam.

Someone was willing to kill...

May you like

To keep one little girl's secret buried forever.
