CHAPTER 4 — The Hidden Door Behind the Library... and the Betrayal That Had Been Planned for Two Years

Marcus didn't think.
He ran.
The crash echoed through the second floor as he sprinted down the hallway toward his private office.
Behind him, Rosa instinctively pulled Lily into her arms.
"What happened?" she whispered.
Marcus didn't answer.
His mind was racing faster than his feet.
There was only one explanation.
Someone else was inside the mansion.
He reached the office door.
It was open.
Just enough for warm light to spill into the dark hallway.
The smell hit him first.
Freshly broken glass.
Then silence.
Too much silence.
Marcus slowly pushed the door open.
The room looked untouched.
Books lined the shelves.
His desk sat exactly where it always had.
The family photographs remained on the mantel.
Nothing seemed missing.
Nothing...
Except one thing.
The framed architectural drawing his grandfather had sketched decades ago now hung crooked on the wall.
Marcus froze.
His grandfather had measured everything.
That frame had always been perfectly level.
Always.
He walked toward it.
Slowly.
Then noticed tiny scratches around the edge of the frame.
Fresh scratches.
Someone had moved it.
Marcus lifted the frame off the wall.
Behind it wasn't drywall.
It was a steel panel.
His heart skipped a beat.
He had lived in the mansion for five years.
He had never seen it before.
At the bottom corner was a tiny keyhole.
Marcus remembered something his grandfather had once laughed about.
"If someone ever knows your front door..."
"...make sure they never find your back one."
At the time, Marcus thought it was another old man's joke.
It wasn't.
He reached into his wallet.
Tucked behind an old photograph of his grandparents was a tiny brass key his grandfather had insisted he keep.
"One day you'll understand why."
Marcus had never used it.
Until now.
The key slid into the lock perfectly.
Click.
The steel panel released.
A narrow passage appeared behind the wall.
Cold air drifted out.
Someone had been inside recently.
Marcus could smell damp concrete... and expensive cologne.
Downstairs...
Vanessa's confidence was beginning to crumble.
She kept calling Marcus.
No answer.
She texted him.
Nothing.
The stranger paced across the living room.
"Where's the backup drive?"
"You said it was in his office."
"It was."
"WAS?"
"I checked last week."
The stranger stared at her.
"You checked?"
Vanessa realized she had said too much.
She quickly corrected herself.
"I mean..."
"...I saw him put something there."
He didn't believe her.
Not completely.
"You've gotten careless."
She crossed her arms.
"I'm the reason we're this close."
"No."
The stranger replied coldly.
"You're the reason we're taking so long."
Marcus quietly entered the hidden passage.
His phone flashlight revealed dust...
Old brick...
Electrical wiring...
And footprints.
Fresh footprints.
Someone had walked through there less than an hour ago.
The tunnel stretched beneath the mansion.
His grandfather had never mentioned it.
At the far end, Marcus saw a faint strip of light.
A hidden door.
He approached carefully.
Voices.
Two people.
One was male.
The other...
Made Marcus stop cold.
He recognized it instantly.
His own attorney.
Daniel Harper.
Marcus felt his stomach twist.
Impossible.
Daniel had worked beside him for twelve years.
He handled every major contract.
Every acquisition.
Every legal battle.
Marcus trusted him almost as much as family.
He remained silent as the voices became clearer.
Daniel spoke first.
"The signatures will be valid after the marriage."
The stranger laughed.
"Marcus never imagined the prenup wasn't the real target."
Marcus's blood ran cold.
Prenup?
What were they talking about?
Vanessa's voice joined in.
"The wedding gives me temporary authority."
Daniel nodded.
"Exactly."
"Forty-eight hours."
"That's all we need."
The stranger unfolded several documents.
"Once Marcus signs the ceremonial property transfers..."
"...our companies acquire controlling interest."
Vanessa smiled.
"And by the time he discovers it..."
"...everything will already belong to offshore corporations."
Marcus's breathing became dangerously slow.
This wasn't about stealing money.
It was about stealing an empire.
Years of work.
Thousands of employees.
Everything.
Daniel continued calmly.
"The shell companies are ready."
"The fake investors are ready."
"The overseas accounts are funded."
"After the honeymoon..."
"...Marcus Webb will legally own almost nothing."
Vanessa laughed.
"He'll still think we're happily married."
The three of them laughed together.
Marcus closed his eyes.
Not from fear.
From disappointment.
The woman he loved.
The lawyer he trusted.
And a man he'd never seen before.
All sitting together...
Planning his financial funeral.
Suddenly...
A tiny voice echoed from the other side of the tunnel.
"Mr. Marcus?"
Marcus spun around.
His heart nearly stopped.
Lily.
She stood at the entrance holding Bun, still wearing her yellow star pajamas.
"Lily!"
He rushed toward her.
"I told you to stay with your mother."
She looked guilty.
"I was worried."
Marcus knelt beside her.
"This place isn't safe."
Lily looked past him toward the hidden room.
Then her little face changed.
Confusion.
Recognition.
She pointed with one tiny finger.
"Oh."
Marcus frowned.
"What is it?"
"I know that room."
Marcus stared at her.
"You've been here before?"
She nodded.
"Miss Vanessa brought me."
Marcus's world stopped.
"When?"
"The day you gave Mommy the shiny necklace."
Marcus remembered instantly.
Three months ago.
He had taken Rosa and Lily into town after Rosa completed four years with the company.
He had bought Rosa a small gold necklace as a thank-you gift.
Vanessa had stayed at the mansion.
Marcus swallowed hard.
"What happened?"
Lily answered with the complete honesty only a child possesses.
"Miss Vanessa told me we were playing hide-and-seek."
Marcus's heart pounded.
"And then?"
"She said if anybody asked..."
"...we were never here."
Marcus felt a wave of anger unlike anything he had ever known.
She hadn't only manipulated him.
She had used a three-year-old child as part of her deception.
Lily continued quietly.
"There was another lady too."
Marcus blinked.
"Another lady?"
She nodded.
"The pretty lady who smells like flowers."
Marcus frowned.
Flowers?
He didn't know anyone.
Then Lily added six innocent words.
"The one in your pictures upstairs."
Marcus's face turned white.
There was only one woman whose photographs still remained upstairs.
His late mother.
No...
That couldn't be right.
Lily shook her head.
"No..."
"Not Grandma."
She squeezed Bun tightly.
"The lady beside Grandma."
Marcus suddenly remembered.
An old family portrait.
His mother...
And his younger sister...
Emily.
Emily had disappeared from the family business eight years earlier after a bitter inheritance dispute.
No one had heard from her since.
Marcus whispered,
"Emily..."
Lily smiled.
"Yes."
"Miss Emily."
Marcus's knees nearly gave out.
His own sister.
The sister he believed had vanished forever...
Had secretly been inside his mansion.
Working with Vanessa.
Working against him.
And somewhere inside the hidden room...
Marcus heard another voice he hadn't recognized before.
A woman's voice.
Calm.
Confident.
Cold.
She spoke only one sentence.
"Tomorrow morning... my brother loses everything."
Marcus slowly looked toward the hidden doorway.
He knew that voice.
He hadn't heard it in nearly a decade.
But he would never forget it.
May you like
Emily Webb had just declared war on her own brother.
