Chapter 1 - THE LOBBY DECEPTION

The tension in the Metropolitan Building’s lobby was a physical weight. Andrew Sterling, a man who measured his life in profit margins and hostile takeovers, felt his heart hammer against his ribs. Beneath his palm, Penny’s shoulder was small and trembling.
The man in the leather jacket at the entrance was no longer stationary. He took three deliberate steps forward, his boots squeaking softly against the pristine marble. He was scanning the lobby, his eyes locking onto the back of Penny’s head.
Andrew didn’t blink. He kept his body positioned as a human shield, completely obscuring Penny from the predator’s line of sight.
"Daddy," Penny whispered, her voice cracking. "Is he coming?"
"No, sweetheart," Andrew said, his voice a low, steady rumble that betrayed none of his internal panic. "Daddy’s right here. You’re safe."
At that moment, the elevator doors behind Andrew chimed. Out stepped Marcus, Andrew’s personal security chief and a former military intelligence officer, followed by three burly guards in sharp black suits. Andrew caught Marcus’s eye and gave a subtle, downward nod—the signal for immediate, non-lethal intervention.
Marcus didn't hesitate. He split his team. Two guards moved along the perimeter toward the revolving glass doors to lock down the exits. Marcus and the third guard walked directly toward the man in the leather jacket.
Realizing he was being flanked, the man’s eyes widened. He reached toward his waistband—a universal gesture that made Andrew’s blood run cold.
"Penny, close your eyes and count to ten," Andrew ordered softly but firmly, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her head into his chest.
Before the man could draw whatever weapon he was reaching for, Marcus closed the distance. With terrifying, silent efficiency, Marcus grabbed the man’s wrist, twisted it behind his back, and slammed him face-first against the concrete pillar near the entrance. The dull thud echoed through the silent lobby.
"Clear," Marcus called out over his earpiece, his voice calm. He looked over at Andrew. "Local PD is already en route. We’ve got him secured."
The man in the leather jacket spat saliva onto the marble. He glared at Andrew, his eyes filled with venom. "You think you’re a hero, Sterling? You don’t know what you’ve just stepped into! That kid is dead weight! Her mother is dead weight! You just signed your own death warrant!"
Andrew didn't look at the man. He kept his arms wrapped around Penny. "Take him to the security holding room. Don't let him out of your sight until the police arrive."
As Marcus dragged the struggling man away, Andrew gently pulled back to look at Penny. Her eyes were wide, pooled with unshed tears, but she wasn't crying. She was incredibly brave.
"Is he gone?" she whispered.
"He's gone," Andrew promised. He looked down at the paper bag she had handed him. Inside was a lukewarm breakfast sandwich and a toy from a kids' meal. "Now, let's talk about your mom. Rebecca Chen, right?"
Penny nodded quickly. "Mommy said if I ever got lost, or if the bad men came, I had to find a man who looked like the pictures on her computer. She showed me your picture, Daddy... I mean, Mr. Sterling. She said you were the only one who could save us."
Andrew froze.
She showed her my picture?
Andrew had never met a Rebecca Chen in his life. He was a bachelor, fiercely protective of his privacy, and his circle was incredibly small. Why would a random nurse at a hospital have his photo saved on her computer, telling her daughter that he was their savior?
Before he could process this, his phone vibrated in his pocket. It was an unknown number.
Andrew answered, stepping slightly away from Penny but keeping his hand on her shoulder. "Sterling."
"Andrew," a woman’s voice gasped on the other end. She was breathing heavily, the sound of monitors and hospital equipment beeping frantically in the background. "They have my daughter. If you have her... please, you have to run. They aren't just after her. They are after you."
"Who is this?" Andrew demanded, his corporate voice returning. "Is this Rebecca Chen?"
"There's no time," the woman sobbed. "They found out about the project. They found out about what your father did ten years ago. Penny is the only proof left. They are going to kill us both to cover it up. Please, Andrew... protect our daughter."
The line went dead.
Andrew’s heart stopped. Our daughter?
He looked down at Penny. The light brown hair. The shape of her jaw. The stubborn, defiant set of her chin.
