Chapter 5 - THE SHOWDOWN AT STERLING BIOTECH

The Sterling Biotech facility was a massive, sterile complex of white concrete and glass, nestled in an industrial park in northern New Jersey. At 2:00 AM, it was deserted, except for the high-tech security guards patrolling the perimeter.
Andrew parked the armored SUV directly in front of the main entrance. He didn't hide. He didn't sneak in. He walked right through the front doors, holding Penny’s hand.
Julian Drake was waiting for him in the main laboratory lobby, flanked by four armed mercenaries. Next to him stood a doctor in a white lab coat, holding a medical case.
"You're on time, Andrew," Julian said, checking his watch. "I knew you were a practical man."
"Let’s get this over with," Andrew said, his voice flat. He looked at the doctor. "What is that?"
"The extraction kit," Julian said. "It will take ten minutes. Once we confirm the genetic markers match your father's research, we will sign the paperwork, and you will receive your cure."
Penny gripped Andrew's leg, sensing the hostility in the room. "Daddy, I'm scared."
"It's okay, Penny," Andrew said, kneeling down to her level. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small, silver flash drive. He tucked it into her pink dress pocket. "I need you to hold onto this for me. Can you do that? It's a very important toy."
She nodded bravely, patting her pocket.
Andrew stood up and looked at Julian. "Before we start, I want to see the paperwork. I want to make sure my daughter's future is secure."
Julian smiled, gesturing to the doctor. "Of course. The documents are in the main conference room. Follow me."
As they walked down the long, sterile hallway, Andrew felt his heart flutter. A sharp, burning pain radiated down his left arm. He stumbled slightly, catching himself against the wall.
"Andrew?" Julian asked, turning around.
"Just... my heart," Andrew gasped, sweat pouring down his forehead. "I need... my medication."
He reached into his pocket, but instead of pulling out his pill bottle, he pulled out his phone. He pressed a single button on the screen.
Instantly, the facility’s fire alarms began to blare. The overhead sprinklers activated, drenching the hallway in cold water.
"What did you do?!" Julian roared, his polished facade cracking.
"I didn't just bring Penny, Julian," Andrew said, coughing as the pain in his chest intensified. "I brought the entire SEC and the FBI. I uploaded every single file on your illegal gene therapy trials to a secure cloud server five minutes ago. If I die tonight, or if anything happens to Penny, those files are automatically distributed to every major news outlet in the world."
Julian’s face turned pale. "You're bluffing! You wouldn't risk your own life! You need the cure!"
"I don't care about the cure," Andrew said, looking at Penny, who was being shielded from the water by his body. "I care about my daughter."
Suddenly, the glass ceiling of the lobby shattered.
FBI tactical teams dropped down on ropes, flashbangs exploding in blinding flashes of light.
"Federal Bureau! Drop your weapons!" a voice boomed over a megaphone.
Julian’s mercenaries panicked, opening fire. The hallway erupted into chaos. Andrew grabbed Penny and threw his body over her, shielding her from the flying glass and stray bullets.
He felt a sharp pain in his chest—not from a bullet, but from his failing heart. The stress, the physical exertion, and the adrenaline had finally pushed his diseased organ past its limit.
The world began to fade to black around the edges.
"Daddy!" Penny cried, her small hands shaking his shoulders. "Daddy, wake up!"

"Penny..." Andrew whispered, his vision blurring. "You're... you're a Sterling. Be brave."
His eyes closed, and he fell into the darkness.
