Chapter 6 - THE TWIST OF FATE (THE ENDING)

The white light was blinding.

Andrew opened his eyes, expecting to see the sterile hallway of the biotech facility, or perhaps nothing at all.

Instead, he saw a clean white ceiling. The steady, rhythmic beep of a heart monitor filled the room. He felt a soft bed beneath him.

He turned his head.

Sitting in a chair next to his bed was a young woman with tired eyes and light brown hair, her arm in a cast.

Rebecca Chen.

And curled up on the edge of his bed, fast asleep with a plush bear, was Penny.

"You're awake," Rebecca whispered, her eyes filling with tears.

"Am I... dead?" Andrew asked, his voice hoarse.

"No," Rebecca said, reaching out to gently touch his hand. "The FBI got you to the hospital in time. But your heart... it failed completely on the operating table."

Andrew frowned. "Then how am I..."

"They used the gene therapy, Andrew," Rebecca explained softly. "During the raid, Marcus secured the completed sequence from Julian’s private safe. The surgeons were able to administer the gene sequence during your emergency transplant. Your body didn't reject the new tissue. Your heart is completely healed."

Andrew let out a long, slow breath. He looked down at Penny, who stirred slightly in her sleep, murmuring something about "Daddy."

"Why did you do it, Rebecca?" Andrew asked. "Why did you use my DNA? Why did you make her?"

Rebecca looked down, her expression a mix of guilt and sorrow. "Ten years ago, your father knew he was dying. He knew you had inherited his condition. He was obsessed with saving the Sterling line, but he didn't trust you to do it yourself. He hired me to oversee the project. But when he died, the board tried to destroy the research to keep the patent for themselves. I couldn't let them destroy her."

She looked at Penny with fierce, motherly love. "She was an embryo, Andrew. Your embryo. I couldn't let them discard her like trash. So I carried her. I raised her. I wanted to tell you, but I knew Julian Drake was watching you. I knew the moment I approached you, they would target us both. I had to wait until I had no other choice."

"The morning in the lobby," Andrew realized. "You knew they were coming for you."

"They ambushed me at my apartment," Rebecca nodded, tears spilling over. "I managed to get Penny out the back door. I told her to run to your office building. I told her to find her daddy. I knew... I knew you would protect her."

Andrew looked at his hands. They were no longer the cold, calculated hands of a ruthless CEO. They were the hands of a man who had been given a second chance at life—and a family.

"What happens now?" Rebecca asked quietly. "The board is in custody. Julian Drake is facing life in prison. But the media... they are going to want to know who Penny is."

Andrew smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes. He reached out and gently stroked Penny’s hair.

"She’s Penny Sterling," Andrew said, his voice firm and filled with absolute certainty. "My daughter. And as of today... Sterling Investments is no longer a corporate empire. It's a family business."

Penny opened her eyes, blinking sleepily. She saw Andrew looking at her and let out a happy yawn.

"Good morning, Daddy," she whispered, climbing into his arms.

Andrew held her tight, feeling the strong, steady, and completely healed beat of his own heart against hers.

"Good morning, sweetheart," Andrew whispered back. "I didn't forget my lunch today."
