Chapter 2 - The Contract and the Crimson Threat

The study was dark, illuminated only by the crackling fireplace and a single desk lamp. Elena stood nervously by the door, while Alexander sat behind his massive mahogany desk, cradling a fast-asleep Liam.

"Sit down, Elena," Alexander commanded softly.

Elena hesitated before sitting on the edge of the leather chair. "Mr. Whitman, if I caused any trouble, I can pack my bags tonight. I know my place."

"Your place," Alexander said, looking up, "is apparently the only place my son feels safe. I’ve watched you on the security cameras, Elena. When the nannies think I’m not looking, they ignore him. But you... you treat him like he’s your own. You sing to him the old lullabies my late wife used to sing."

Elena bit her lip. "My mother used to sing them to me. I didn't mean to overstep."

Alexander slid a thick document across the desk. "I’m offering you a contract. One year. You will marry me, become Liam’s legal mother, and live here as the mistress of the house. In exchange, I will pay off your sister’s medical debts in full, secure her the best doctors in the country, and deposit five million dollars into your account every month."

Elena’s breath hitched. "A fake marriage? Why me? You could force any of those women..."

"Those women want my money, my status, and my power. They see Liam as a trophy or an obstacle," Alexander said coldly. "You see him as a child who needs love. I don't need a wife, Elena. I need a mother for my son. Do we have a deal?"

Thinking of her ailing sister gasping for air in a dingy hospital bed, Elena swallowed her pride. "Yes, Mr. Whitman. We have a deal."

The news of the billionaire marrying his maid broke the internet the next morning. It was a scandal that shook the city's elite to its core. But while the public viewed it as a modern-day Cinderella story, behind closed doors, a storm was brewing.

Later that afternoon, while Alexander was at the office, Elena was walking through the mansion's rose garden when a shadow fell over her.

It was Isabella. She hadn't left the city. She bypassed the security using her family's old credentials.

"You think you won, don't you, rat?" Isabella snarled, stepping into Elena’s personal space. Her crimson lipstick looked like fresh blood. "You played a clever game using that brat. But let me tell you something, Elena. A maid doesn't become a queen just because she wears a crown. Alexander’s late wife didn't die of natural causes, you know. This house is a graveyard. And if you think you can survive me, you're dead wrong."

Before Elena could reply, Isabella grabbed her arm, digging her long, manicured nails into Elena’s skin. "Enjoy the mansion while you can. Because I am going to tear down your little fairytale, brick by brick. And I’ll start with your precious sister."
