Chapter 2 - The Ambush at SunriseAt 6:30 a.m., a fleet of three black Maybachs idled quietly outside a modest brick apartment complex in Queens.

Isabel Vega stepped out onto the front stoop holding a worn canvas tote bag in one hand and Mateo's small backpack in the other. Her heart had been hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs ever since yesterday afternoon in Central Park. She knew that look in Julian’s eyes. It was the same look he had given her the day he chose his corporate kingdom over their future—a look of absolute, unyielding fixation. She had thought she was safe in Queens. She had thought six years was enough time to bury a ghost.

"Mommy, why are we walking so fast?" Mateo asked, struggling to keep up with her long strides while clutching a plastic action figure.

"We're just catching an early bus, sweetie—"

The central door of the lead Maybach clicked open.

Isabel froze. The air left her lungs as Julian Mercer stepped out onto the cracked concrete sidewalk. He wore a tailored charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place against the peeling paint of the Queens walk-up, but it was his face that made Isabel stumble backward. His gray eyes were locked onto hers, cold, sharp, and burning with a terrifying intensity.

"Good morning, Isabel," Julian said, his voice smooth, echoing quietly in the damp morning air.

"Julian," she managed, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to keep it steady. She pulled Mateo behind her skirt, her hands gripping her son's shoulders defensively. "You shouldn't be here. Leave us alone."

Julian took two slow steps forward, his gaze dropping briefly to the small boy hiding behind Isabel's legs, before returning to her eyes. "Leave? Isabel, you didn't think you could hide my flesh and blood in the outer boroughs and expect me to just wave goodbye, did you?"

"He is not yours," Isabel lied fiercely, though her voice cracked on the final word. "We have nothing to do with you. Go back to your towers and your money."

Julian stopped just inches away from her. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a heavy cream-colored legal envelope, and tapped it gently against his palm. "We can do this the hard way, where I freeze your landlord, strip your teaching credentials, and drag you through a custody battle that will bleed you dry before lunch. Or..." He paused, his gaze softening by a fraction as he looked down at the boy peeking out from behind Isabel. "...we can sit down, have a civilized breakfast, and talk about how a father enters his son's life."

Isabel looked at the envelope, then up at the cold, unyielding face of the man she had once loved. She knew then that her quiet life was officially over.
