Chapter 3 - The Golden TrapThe private dining room at the Mandarin Oriental overlooked a misty Central Park. The table was laden with silver domes, fresh pastries, and cut fruit, but neither adult had touched a thing.

Mateo sat in a high-backed leather chair that swallowed him whole, happily coloring inside a brand-new sketchpad provided by a hovering waiter, completely oblivious to the high-stakes chess match unfolding across the table.

"The DNA test was processed last night," Julian said quietly, breaking the silence. He slid a single piece of heavy cardstock across the white tablecloth. "99.999%. You didn't even try to change his middle name, Isabel. Julian. You gave him my middle name."

Isabel kept her eyes locked on her coffee cup. Her fingers traced the rim so tightly her knuckles were bloodless. "I was young, and I was stupidly romantic. I thought a part of you would stay with me after you threw us away."

"I didn't throw you away," Julian snapped, the polished veneer cracking for a fraction of a second. "You gave me an ultimatum! Choose the firm or choose me. You knew my father died bankrupt, you knew what the corporate buyout meant for my family's survival—"

"And you knew what my mother died of!" Isabel shot back, her voice rising in a sharp hiss. "She died waiting for a man who was 'too busy closing one last deal' to visit her hospital bed! I swore I would never raise a child with a ghost. And I haven't. For six years, I’ve been both mother and father."

Julian stared at her. The anger inside him clashed with a sudden, overwhelming surge of respect—and guilt. He looked over at Mateo, who was humming to himself while drawing a very lopsided golden retriever.

"I'm not asking to take him from you," Julian said slowly, leaning forward. "That’s not the play here. But he needs stability. He needs a future that doesn't rely on your adjunct teaching salary and a cramped two-bedroom walk-up in Queens."

"He needs love, Julian! Something your money can't buy!"

"I can give him both," Julian replied, his voice chillingly absolute. "Here is my proposal: You move into the East Side townhouse I've prepared. You have full staff, financial independence, and Mateo gets access to the best private schooling in the country. You act as co-parents under my roof."

May you like

Isabel stared at him as if he had lost his mind. "Under your roof? Are you insane? That's not co-parenting, Julian—that's golden imprisonment!"

Before Julian could answer, the heavy oak doors of the private dining room burst open.
