Chapter 2 - DNA and the Shadow of the Throne

The Trap is SetThe next morning, the resort felt different. The sunny, idyllic atmosphere of Ocean Crest had been replaced by a suffocating tension. Marin noticed black SUVs parked at every exit, their engines idling silently. Men in dark suits stood near the dunes, watching the playground.

Marin tried to hand in her resignation to Greta Monroe, but the assistant manager just pushed the paper back across the desk with shaking hands.

"I can't accept this, Marin," Greta whispered, looking terrified. "Mr. Mercer bought out the resort's remaining lease this morning. He owns the hotel now. He said if you leave the premises, he fires the entire management staff and shuts down the facility permanently. Please... just stay until the weekend."

Marin walked out of the office, her blood boiling. Declan wasn't just asking questions anymore; he was building a cage.

She found him waiting for her in the resort's private library, a dark-paneled room filled with first-edition books and the scent of expensive leather. On the table between them sat a sterile white medical envelope.

"I need a DNA test, Marin," Declan said without preamble. He looked like he hadn't slept in forty-eight hours.

"No," Marin said instantly. "You don't get to command my son's DNA like it's a corporate acquisition."

"It's not an acquisition, it's a shield!" Declan slammed his fist on the table. "You don't understand the world I live in. My father died six months ago. His will states that Mercer Holdings goes entirely to the eldest living biological male heir. Until three days ago, everyone thought that was my half-brother, Julian—Victoria's son. If Julian takes the chair, he will liquidate the company's charitable wings, fire fifty thousand workers, and strip my father's legacy to the bone."

"I don't care about your corporate wars!" Marin cried out.

"You will care when Victoria realizes that Evan is a threat to her three-billion-dollar empire!" Declan stepped forward, grabbing Marin's hands. His touch was electric, filled with a desperate urgency. "She is ruthless, Marin. Nine years ago, when I left Montauk, it wasn't a family emergency. My father had suffered a stroke, and Victoria used that chaos to intercept my communications, seize my private logs, and isolate me. If she found out you called... she was the one who threatened you. Not me. I never knew."

The Missing PieceMarin stared at him, the walls of her anger suddenly cracking. The cold woman on the phone... the threats... it hadn't been Declan. It had been his family's monstrous machinery.

"Is that the truth?" she breathed.

"I swear it on my life," Declan said, his eyes burning with sincerity. "Give me the test. Let me prove he's mine legally. Once he is recognized as a Mercer heir, my personal security team can legally protect him under the family trust. Without it, my hands are tied if Victoria uses the courts to track you down."

Marin looked at the white envelope. She thought of Evan, of his bright smile, his innocent paper airplanes, and the heavy jawline he inherited from a man who lived in a castle made of glass and knives.

"Fine," she whispered. "But you don't tell him yet. Not until the results are in."

The Nightmare BeginsThree hours later, Marin went to pick up Evan from the garden where Otis was supposed to be watching him.

The garden was empty.

Otis was lying on the grass, groaning and clutching a head wound, his silver gardening shears scattered around him. Evan’s crushed paper airplane lay in a puddle of water near the hedge.

THE CHAPTER 2 HOOK: Marin’s scream tore through the afternoon air. Declan arrived within seconds, his security team drawing weapons. Vance sprinted up, holding a security tablet with a live feed of the resort's rear gate. A black Mercedes van with tinted windows was speeding toward the highway. "It’s Victoria’s security detail," Vance said grimly. "They didn't wait for the DNA results, sir. They took the boy."
