Chapter 10 - The New DawnSix months later, the front page of the Wall Street Journal carried a headline that shook the global financial markets to their core:

FROM HOUSEKEEPER TO EMPEROR: THE VANCE-WINSLOW MERGER REDEFINES CORPORATE AMERICA.

The accompanying photo showed Eleanor Vance-Winslow standing at the podium of the New York Stock Exchange, ringing the opening bell with a quiet, devastating grace. Standing beside her, holding a small pink stuffed rabbit in one hand and Arthur Winslow’s hand in the other, was four-year-old Lucy, wearing a brand-new pair of shoes that fit her perfectly.

Back at the estate in Connecticut, the white-painted door at the end of the upstairs hallway remained unlocked. The linen closet was still stocked with pristine, folded sheets—neat, edge to edge, corner to corner.

Because in the house of the girl who counted the numbers, the arrows had finally stopped drifting down. The numbers were infinite now. And they belonged to the future.
