Chapter 9 - The Final ReckoningJulian dropped the envelope.

It hit the marble floor with a soft, pathetic slap. The papers spilled out—blank sheets of cheap printer paper scribbled over with crayon by a local toddler to look like legal text.
Julian stared at his father, his knees buckling beneath him as the full, crushing weight of the trap closed around his throat.
"You... you're dead," Julian whispered, backing away until his spine slammed against the elevator doors. "I saw the death certificate—I forged the signature—I took the insurance payout—"
"And you left it all in a paper trail longer than a CVS receipt," a cool voice echoed from the elevator behind him.
The doors chimed again, opening to reveal two federal marshals holding an arrest warrant with Julian’s exact name on it.
"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for insurance fraud, identity theft, extortion, and the falsification of federal documents," the lead marshal announced, clamping heavy steel cuffs around Julian’s wrists before he could even draw a breath.
As his son was dragged away screaming curses into the quiet Manhattan night, Silas Vance walked slowly across the marble floor, leaning heavily on his cane, until he stood before his granddaughter.
He reached out a trembling, age-spotted hand and gently touched Eleanor’s cheek—the exact same spot where she had wiped away her tears in the linen closet eight months ago.

"You counted, didn't you, Ellie?" the old man whispered, a proud, watery smile breaking across his weathered face.
"Every single time, Grandpa," Eleanor answered, letting the tears fall freely at last—not of grief, not of fear, but of absolute, unbreakable victory. "Every single time."
