Chapter 7 - The Uninvited GuestThe peace didn't last forty-eight hours.

It was 2:00 AM when the private security alert chimed softly on Arthur’s bedside terminal. He was awake instantly, his military training kicking in before his eyes even fully adjusted to the dark. He slipped out from under the duvet, careful not to wake Lucy, who was curled up soundly between him and Eleanor in the massive king bed.

Eleanor’s eyes flickered open the second he moved. "What is it?" she whispered, her hand immediately shooting out to check the empty space beside her where Lucy slept.

"Stay here," Arthur murmured, sliding his feet into a pair of leather loafers and pulling a sleek titanium-alloy security tablet from the nightstand.

He tapped the screen, pulling up the live CCTV feed from the ground-floor private lobby.

A figure was standing by the private elevator bank—soaked to the skin by the torrential rain lashing Manhattan, wearing an oversized trench coat, and staring directly up at the ceiling-mounted camera with a manic, unhinged grin.

It wasn't a police officer. It wasn't a reporter.

It was Julian Vance—Eleanor’s estranged, long-lost uncle whom she hadn't seen in twelve years, holding a heavy manila envelope clutched in a white-knuckled grip.

Eleanor had appeared behind Arthur like a shadow, wrapping a silk robe tightly around her shoulders. When her eyes caught the screen, her breath stopped.

"Julian," she gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "How did he find us?"

Before Arthur could answer, the security intercom buzzed. A harsh, raspy voice echoed through the master suite from the hallway speaker:

“Open the damn door, niece! I know you’re sitting up there swimming in stolen billionaire cash! And I brought the original copy of your grandfather’s true will—the one that leaves everything to ME!”
