Chapter 4 - THE SECURITY TAPEWhile Penelope was navigating the high-stakes emotional minefield of the Crawford estate in Lake Geneva, back in downtown Chicago, the Empress Hotel was humming along with its usual afternoon rhythm.

Bellmen in crisp uniforms loaded luggage, tourists admired the towering crystal chandelier in the lobby, and front desk agents processed check-ins with practiced smiles. But in the basement security office, lit by the flickering glow of sixteen monitors, a storm was brewing.
Marcus Vance, the head of hotel night security, sat back in his ergonomic chair, rubbing his bloodshot eyes. He was bored. Usually, his shifts were uneventful—the occasional intoxicated guest trying to wander into the wrong suite, or a lost child near the elevators. But today, he had received an internal memo that made his skin crawl.
Effective immediately, all staff inquiries regarding Mrs. Penelope Adams-Crawford are to be redirected to executive management.
Marcus frowned, leaning closer to his dual monitors. Penelope Adams-Crawford?
He knew Penelope. Everyone in the back-of-house staff knew Penelope. She was the quiet, hardworking housekeeper on the third floor who always smiled when she emptied your trash can and never complained about double shifts. Wife to Albert Crawford? Empress Hotel owner? Billionaire mogul?
Marcus laughed out loud, shaking his head. “Yeah, and I’m the CEO of Pepsi.”
Driven by pure, unfiltered curiosity and a stubborn desire to uncover workplace gossip, Marcus decided to dig into the archives. He pulled up the security footage from two nights ago—the exact night of the explosive lobby incident where the woman in diamonds had humiliated Penelope.
He fast-forwarded through the tape, skipping past the arrival of the black cars and the usual evening rush, until he found the timestamp: 7:14 PM.
On the screen, the lobby was crowded. He watched the woman in the designer sunglasses—a high-paying VIP guest named Veronica Vance—march up to Penelope, who was standing by her yellow mop bucket. He watched Veronica raise her voice, pointing a manicured finger directly into Penelope’s face. He saw Penelope flinch, tears welling in her eyes as the entire lobby turned away to pretend they didn't see the public humiliation.
Then, the screen shifted.
Albert Crawford materialized out of nowhere, his face carved from ice. Marcus watched the interaction play out without sound—Albert stepping in, his lips moving as he addressed Veronica. He watched the exact moment Albert looked down at Penelope, his gray eyes softening into something unreadable, before turning back to Veronica and dropping the bomb.
“She is my wife.”
Marcus froze. He hit the pause button, staring at the still frame of Albert Crawford’s face on the monitor.
Then, Marcus rewound the tape. Ten seconds back. Play.
He watched Albert’s expression again. He watched the hesitation before he said the words. He watched the absolute shock wash over Penelope’s face.
Marcus leaned back slowly, a slow, predatory grin spreading across his face.
“He lied,” Marcus whispered to the empty room. “The billionaire didn't marry the housekeeper. He pulled a stunt in the middle of the lobby to save her from a snob, and now the whole hotel is playing along.”
This wasn't just workplace gossip. This was leverage.
Marcus was a man with massive gambling debts—thousands of dollars owed to dangerous people on the West Side who didn't care about hotel occupancy rates or family drama. For months, he had been looking for a way out, a golden ticket that could wipe his slate clean.
A fake marriage at the top of Chicago’s hotel empire? That wasn't just a golden ticket—it was a lottery win.
Marcus reached for his phone, his fingers tapping rapidly against the screen as he exported the video clip directly to his personal device. He encrypted the file, backed it up to an off-site cloud storage, and smiled a cold, calculating smile.

“Let’s see how much a billionaire is willing to pay to protect his little maid,” Marcus muttered to himself.
Little did Marcus know, his digital greed had just set off a chain reaction that would put not only Penelope and Albert in immediate danger, but threaten the very foundation of the Empress Hotel itself.
