Chapter 8 - THE MASQUERADE DEEPENSThe arrest of Marcus Vance was swept under the rug with the terrifying efficiency that only a multi-million-dollar hotel empire could muster. By Tuesday morning, a new head of security was in place, the leaked files were permanently scrubbed from the digital ether, and the Empress Hotel was operating as if nothing had ever happened.

Yet, for Penelope and Albert, nothing could ever go back to the way it was.
The line between a fake marriage and a real partnership had blurred so completely that neither of them dared to speak its name. Penelope had officially moved out of her cramped apartment on the South Side—temporarily, Albert insisted, for her own safety while the fallout settled—and into the expansive, minimalist penthouse suite on the top floor of the Empress Hotel.
It was a world away from scrub buckets and bleach. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered a panoramic view of the Chicago skyline, the rooms were filled with modern art and soft cashmere throws, and a private elevator carried her directly to the roof garden.
Yet, despite the luxury, the weight of the deception was about to reach its absolute breaking point.
On Wednesday afternoon, a sleek black town car pulled up to the grand entrance of the Empress Hotel. Inside was Aunt Beatrice, accompanied by Dr. Jonathan Hayes—the lead cardiologist who had been treating Eleanor Crawford at the Lake Geneva estate.
They didn't call ahead. They didn't schedule an appointment. They simply walked through the revolving doors and straight to the tenth-floor executive elevators.
Penelope was sitting in Albert’s office, reviewing hotel linen supply logs, when the double doors suddenly swung open without a knock.
Albert jumped up from his desk instantly, his face darkening. “Beatrice? What are you doing here? And Dr. Hayes... what is the meaning of this?”
Beatrice walked into the office, her face wearing an expression of absolute, venomous triumph. Behind her stood the cardiologist, looking deeply uncomfortable, holding a thick medical folder against his chest.
“We are here, Albert,” Beatrice said smoothly, her eyes darting maliciously toward Penelope, who stood up slowly from her chair, “because we are going to end this absurd, toxic little theater once and for all.”
Albert stepped in front of Penelope, shielding her with his body. “Watch your tone, Beatrice. You are talking about my wife.”
“Your fake wife,” Beatrice snapped, her voice cutting through the room like a razor blade. She turned to the cardiologist. “Go ahead, Doctor. Tell him what you told me this morning.”
Dr. Hayes swallowed hard, stepping forward and opening his leather folder.
“Mr. Crawford,” the doctor said quietly, avoiding Albert’s furious gaze. “Your mother... Eleanor’s condition has taken a sudden, severe turn. The stress of the past week, combined with... rumors she heard circulating among high-society circles about inconsistencies in your marriage... caused her heart rate to spike dangerously last night.”
Penelope felt the blood drain entirely from her face. The room seemed to tilt sideways.
“She’s in the hospital in Lake Geneva,” Dr. Hayes continued, his voice heavy with regret. “She asked for you, Albert. And she asked specifically for Penelope. She wants to see her daughter-in-law one last time before... before her heart gives out completely.”
Albert froze. The absolute color drained from his face. All the power, all the control, all the empire he had built vanished in a fraction of a second, leaving behind only a terrified son about to lose his mother.
Beatrice stepped closer, a cruel, triumphant smile curving her lips.

“So here is your choice, Albert,” Beatrice whispered viciously. “You can pack up your little maid, drive to the hospital, and let her stand before a dying woman who believes she is part of our family—knowing that the second Eleanor passes away, the entire truth will come out and destroy your reputation forever. Or... you end the lie right here, right now, and let her die knowing the truth.”
Penelope stood frozen behind Albert, the crushing weight of the ultimate choice crashing down upon her shoulders.
