Chapter 7 - THE TRAP IS SETBy 8:00 PM, the Empress Hotel had settled into its quiet, nighttime routine. The lobby hummed with the soft murmur of jazz playing from the lounge, and the front desk was manned by the evening staff.

In the subterranean security office deep in the hotel basement, Marcus Vance leaned back in his chair with a smug, self-satisfied grin. He had checked his offshore account three times in the last hour. Two hundred thousand dollars was a life-changing amount of money—enough to clear his debts, leave Chicago behind, and live comfortably on a beach somewhere warm.

He looked at the countdown timer on his computer screen. Midnight. If the wire transfer didn't hit by midnight, the explosive video of Albert Crawford and his fake housekeeping wife would go live to every major news outlet in the Midwest.

Knock. Knock.

Marcus frowned. Security headquarters was off-limits to regular staff at this hour. He stood up, buttoned his suit jacket, and strode over to the heavy metal door, pulling it open.

Standing in the doorway wasn't an ordinary hotel employee.

It was Albert Crawford.

Alone. Without his security detail, without his board members, dressed in a custom charcoal suit that seemed to absorb the dim fluorescent light of the hallway. His face was an absolute mask of stone.

Marcus’s smirk widened. He stepped back, swinging the door wide open. “Well, well. Look who decided to visit the basement. Come in, Mr. Crawford. Please, take a seat. Or are you here to hand over the banking routing numbers yourself?”

Albert didn't smile. He walked slowly into the cramped security office, his cold gray eyes sweeping over the multiple monitors displaying live feeds of the lobby, the hallways, and the executive elevators.

“You’re playing a very dangerous game, Marcus,” Albert said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he stopped in the center of the room.

“Dangerous?” Marcus laughed, crossing his arms and leaning against the edge of his desk. “I call it good business. You lied to the public, you staged a fake marriage with a maid to save face, and you threatened a VIP guest. That’s insider fraud, Mr. Crawford. The board would love to see how you’ve been running this hotel.”

Albert didn't blink. “You think you have all the cards, don't you?”

“I have the video,” Marcus replied smugly, tapping his smartphone on the desk. “And it’s backed up in three different cloud locations. If anything happens to me, it goes public automatically.”

“You’re right,” a soft voice echoed from the hallway.

Marcus jerked his head toward the open doorway.

Out of the shadows stepped Penelope Adams. She wasn't wearing her blue housekeeping uniform. She was wearing the tailored ivory blazer and emerald silk dress from the boutique in downtown Chicago. Her hair was styled, her posture was upright, and her amber eyes locked onto Marcus with absolute, unwavering steel.

Marcus stared at her, dumbfounded. “You... what are you doing here?”

“I’m here to watch you make the biggest mistake of your life,” Penelope said calmly, stepping fully into the room and closing the heavy metal door behind her with a definitive clack.

Marcus sneered, looking back and forth between them. “What is this? A pathetic little Bonnie and Clyde routine? You think two hundred grand is too much? Fine. Let’s make it three hundred thousand—or the video drops right now.”

Albert took a slow step forward, his shadow falling over Marcus like an oncoming avalanche.

“You made one critical error, Marcus,” Albert said quietly.

Marcus blinked. “What are you talking about?”

“You assumed my IT team was just tracking your IP address,” Albert replied, a cold, dangerous smile finally touching his lips. “You didn't realize that my security network isn't just internal. It’s federal.”

Before Marcus could process the words, the heavy metal door behind Penelope suddenly burst open.

Three federal cyber-crime agents in tactical vests swarmed into the room, their badges flashing under the harsh fluorescent lights, their hands instantly pinning Marcus face-down against the steel desk with a sharp crash of equipment.

“Marcus Vance,” the lead agent barked, snapping steel handcuffs onto the screaming security guard’s wrists. “You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, extortion, and unauthorized access to protected corporate networks.”

Marcus thrashed wildly, his face pressed against the desk, his smug confidence evaporating into sheer terror. “You can't do this! The video! The video is set to release!”

“Your cloud backups?” Albert asked, stepping forward and pulling a small flash drive from his pocket, tossing it onto the desk. “My cybersecurity team wiped your servers twenty minutes ago. Your extortion attempt ended before it even began.”

As Marcus was hauled out of the room in handcuffs, kicking and screaming obscenities, the heavy metal door clicked shut once more, leaving Albert and Penelope alone in the quiet basement office.

Penelope let out a long, shaky breath, her knees suddenly feeling weak. She grabbed the edge of the desk to steady herself.

Albert turned to her, the ice in his eyes completely gone, replaced by a raw, intense warmth that made her heart race faster than it had during the entire confrontation.

“Are you alright?” Albert asked softly, stepping close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him.

May you like

Penelope looked up into his gray eyes, a slow, breathless smile breaking across her face.

“I think,” Penelope whispered, her voice steady and proud, “I’m getting rather good at being a billionaire’s wife.”
