Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Locket

Max stared at Lily in disbelief as they hid in the narrow, dusty confines of the servant's elevator. The elevator was dead without power, but it served as a temporary shield.
"Julian's daughter..." Max whispered, the pieces of a decade-old puzzle crashing together in his mind. "Julian told me his family was safe in Europe. He told me he sold his shares to retire."
"He lied to protect us," Lily sobbed quietly, clutching a small silver locket around her neck. "Vance threatened to kill my mother and me if my dad didn't sign over his share of the AI defense algorithms. When my dad refused, Vance pushed him. They made it look like a suicide. My mother hid me, but last month... Vance's men found her."
She opened the locket. Inside was not a photo, but a micro-SD card coated in protective resin.
"This contains the master codes to the automated defense network Max-Julian Tech built," Lily said. "Vance needs it to sell the system to foreign buyers. If he gets it, he controls the security infrastructure of three major nations. But my dad programmed it to only unlock with my biometric data. My DNA."
Max felt a cold rage boil in his chest. Julian hadn't betrayed him. Julian had been murdered, and Max had spent ten years letting Vance run rampant, believing his old friend had simply given up.
"Thomas," Max muttered, his mind flashing to his driver. "Thomas was hired through a security firm recommended by Vance."
Right on cue, the service elevator door shook.

"Mr. Foster?" Thomas's voice echoed through the metal door, flat and devoid of its usual warmth. "Open up. Let's make this easy. Mr. Vance only wants the girl. He’s willing to leave your empire intact if you just step aside."
Hook: The betrayal was complete. The man Max had trusted with his life for eight years was working for the monster who killed his best friend.
