Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Twist and New Dawn

"You always did underestimate Julian's genius, Richard," Max said softly. "And you definitely underestimated mine."

Max didn't press a detonator to blow up the building. He pressed a button that activated the micro-SD card’s self-destruct mechanism—but with a twist.

The laptop screen in front of Vance’s technician suddenly flashed bright red. A countdown timer appeared: 00:03... 00:02... 00:01...

"What did you do?!" Vance screamed as the screen went black.

"Julian and I built a poison pill into the code ten years ago," Max explained, stepping forward, his voice calm. "If the biometric data was bypassed forcefully without Lily's conscious, willing approval, the system wouldn't just lock down. It would broadcast the entire decrypted history of Vance Industries’ illegal transactions, offshore accounts, and assassination orders directly to every major news outlet and federal agency in the world."

The technician stared at his screen in horror. "Mr. Vance... it's done. Our servers... they're wiping themselves. And our private files... they’ve just been leaked to the FBI. All of them."

Sirens wailed in the distance, getting louder by the second. Red and blue lights began to paint the wet warehouse windows.

Vance staggered back, realizing his entire empire had dissolved in a matter of seconds. He looked at Lily, then at Max, his face pale. "You... you ruined me."

"No," Max said, untying Lily and pulling her into a protective hug. "You ruined yourself the day you thought money was more important than people."

Vance lunged at Max in a fit of rage, but a dozen SWAT officers burst through the doors, guns raised. "FBI! Hands in the air!"

Vance was tackled to the concrete, screaming curses as he was handcuffed and dragged away.

Three Months Later...The Chicago sun shone brightly over the lakefront estate. The iron gates were open, no longer a barrier to keep the world out, but an invitation.

Max stood on the terrace, holding a mug of hot chocolate.

Lily walked out, wearing a school uniform, a bright smile on her face. Behind her, a golden retriever puppy bounded across the lawn, barking happily.

"He's destroying your flowerbeds, Max," Lily laughed.

Max smiled, a genuine, warm smile that reached his eyes. "Let him. The mansion was too perfect anyway."

Lily walked over and leaned against the railing next to him. "Thank you for letting me stay, Max."

Max looked down at her, placing a hand on her shoulder. "You didn't just ask to sleep in my doghouse, Lily. You saved my life. I think it’s time we officially make this our home."

The billionaire who had everything had finally found the one thing money could never buy: a family.
