Chapter 2 - THE SHATTERED COFFEE CUP

Headline: "She dropped the tray, but when the Billionaire looked at her face, the entire room went dead silent..."The transition from the freezing New York streets to the interior of the Vance Estate felt like stepping into another dimension. Maya Collins kept her eyes glued to the polished mahogany floors as the head housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, led her through the labyrinthine corridors.

"Rule number one," Mrs. Gable said, her voice sharp as glass. "You do not speak to Madam Eleanor unless spoken to. Rule number two: You stay completely invisible to Miss Chloe. And rule number three: You do not touch anything in the West Wing. Am I understood?"

"Yes, ma'am," Maya murmured, tightening her grip on her cleaning cart.

For the first two weeks, Maya was a ghost. She scrubbed the gold-plated fixtures in the guest bathrooms, dusted oil paintings worth more than her lifetime earnings, and kept her head down. But she couldn't shake a bizarre, suffocating feeling of familiarity. The scent of jasmine in the air, the specific chime of the grandfather clock in the grand foyer—it triggered faint, ghostly echoes in the back of her mind. Just a coincidence, she told herself. You’re a girl from the Bronx. You don't belong here.

Then came the night of the Autumn Gala.

The estate was buzzing. Hundreds of elite guests poured into the grand ballroom. Maya was temporarily reassigned to assist the catering staff, carrying trays of expensive champagne and espresso.

"Maya! Take this espresso tray to the private study," the head chef ordered. "Madam Eleanor and Miss Chloe are having a private discussion before the main toast. Hurry!"

Maya balanced the heavy silver tray, her heart hammering against her ribs. She approached the heavy oak doors of the study, which were slightly ajar. Voices drifted out—sharp, tense, and dripping with venom.

"I don't care about the charity board, Mother!" Chloe’s voice whined. "I need you to sign over the trust fund shares today. My fashion line needs the capital!"

"Chloe, you haven't even submitted a business plan," Eleanor’s voice was exhausted, carrying a weight that sounded decades old. "Money requires discipline. You cannot simply throw tantrums to get your way."

"I am a Vance!" Chloe hissed. "It's my birthright!"

Maya knocked softly, but the argument was too loud. Taking a deep breath, she gently pushed the door open. "Excuse me, Madam... I have your coffee."

As Maya stepped forward, the chandelier light caught her face completely.

Eleanor Vance turned around, irritated by the interruption—but the words died in her throat. She froze. Her eyes widened, pupils dilating in sheer, unadulterated shock.

She wasn't looking at a maid. She was looking into a mirror.

Maya had the exact same striking, piercing violet-gray eyes as Eleanor. She had the same distinct, sharp jawline, and the identical silver-streaked dark hair texture. But most shocking of all was the tiny, crescent-shaped birthmark just beneath Maya's left collarbone—visible through the V-neck of her uniform.

Eleanor gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "My God..."

"Is there a problem, Madam?" Maya asked, suddenly terrified by the billionaire's intense, trembling gaze.

"Get out!" Chloe barked, noticing her mother's distraction. "Can't you see we're—" Chloe stopped dead in her tracks. She looked from Maya to Eleanor, then back to Maya. The resemblance was terrifying. It was uncanny.

In her nervousness, Maya’s hands shook. The silver tray tilted. The delicate porcelain cups slid off, crashing onto the marble floor in a brutal explosion of dark liquid and shattered ceramic.

Smash!

"I-I'm so sorry!" Maya dropped to her knees, frantically trying to pick up the sharp shards. "I'll clean it up right away, I'm so sorry—"

"Stop!" Eleanor screamed.

Maya flinched, expecting to be fired on the spot. But Eleanor didn't look angry. She looked like she had just seen a ghost rise from the grave. Eleanor slowly walked over, ignoring the hot coffee soaking into her thousands-of-dollars silk gown, and knelt right in front of Maya.

"What... what is your name?" Eleanor’s voice shook, a tear visibly welling in her eye.

"Maya," she whispered, terrified. "Maya Collins."

From the doorway, Chloe’s face turned from shocked to completely pale. A dark, predatory panic flared in her eyes. "Mother, she's just a clumsy maid! Fire her immediately! Look at her, she’s trying to manipulate you!"

But Eleanor couldn't hear Chloe. She reached out a trembling hand, her fingers brushing against Maya’s cheek. The touch felt like an electric shock to both of them.
