Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Safe

Hook: "I didn't steal them, Arthur," Margaret sobbed. "I saved them from your mother."

The silence in the library was deafening. Margaret stood defiantly, her arms wrapped tightly around the triplets. "You think you know everything because of your billions, Arthur. But you were blind then, and you're blind now."

"Explain," Arthur hissed, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned white. "Explain why my daughters have been living in a rotting house on the edge of town while I spent five years wishing I was dead."

Margaret looked down at the girls. "Sweethearts, go with the nice butler to the kitchen. Get some hot chocolate."

"No!" Clare protested. "We want to know. Is this our dad? Why did you lie to us about Mom?"

Margaret’s face crumpled. "Please, Clare. Just for a moment."

Once the girls were ushered out, Margaret sank into a velvet chair, looking older than ever. "Five years ago, Victoria didn't die of childbirth complications. She was poisoned, Arthur. Slowly. Over months. She knew it, but she couldn't prove it. She came to me—her private nurse—and begged me to help her escape."

Arthur's face drained of color. "Poisoned? By whom?"

"By your mother, Eleanor Sterling," Margaret said, her voice trembling but resolute. "Eleanor wanted Victoria out of the picture. She wanted you to marry a woman of your own status, not a middle-class girl. When Victoria went into labor early during the clinic fire, she knew she wouldn't make it. She made me swear on my life to take the babies and run. She said if Eleanor found out they were alive, they would never survive to see their first birthday."

Arthur took a step back, his world tilting on its axis. "No. My mother loved Victoria. She was devastated..."

"She was acting!" Margaret shouted. "The monthly envelopes you found? The ones with the foreign stamps? Those weren't from Elise. I had a friend in Europe mail them to my house to make the girls believe their mother was still alive, so they wouldn't ask questions. But the money inside? That was blackmail money I demanded from Eleanor to keep my mouth shut and keep the girls safe!"

Suddenly, the library doors clicked.

Standing in the doorway was Eleanor Sterling herself, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, a cold, elegant smile playing on her lips. Behind her stood three police officers.

"What a lovely story, Margaret," Eleanor said smoothly. "Too bad the police are here to arrest you for kidnapping and extortion."
