Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Matriarch

Hook: The DNA results arrived, but they didn't prove who the father was—they proved who had ordered the hit.
"Mother?" Arthur whispered, looking between Eleanor and Margaret. "What are you doing here?"
"I'm protecting our family, Arthur," Eleanor said, stepping into the room. She looked at the triplets, who were peeking from behind the door, with utter disgust. "This woman stole your children after the tragic clinic fire. She has been blackmailing me for years, threatening to drag our family name through the mud with these baseless lies. Officers, arrest her."
The police moved toward Margaret. The triplets screamed, running out to cling to their grandmother's legs.
"Don't take her!" Anne cried. "Grandma! Dad, stop them!"
Arthur stood frozen. His mind was a battlefield. On one side was his mother, the woman who had raised him. On the other was Margaret, the tired nurse who had raised his daughters in poverty but kept them loved and alive.
"Stop," Arthur commanded. The authority in his voice made the officers hesitate. "Nobody is arresting anyone until I get the test results."
Just then, Arthur's assistant rushed into the room, holding a sealed manila envelope. "Sir. The rapid DNA and toxicology archive results you requested."
Arthur snatched the envelope. He tore it open, his eyes scanning the medical jargon.
The DNA was a perfect match. The girls were his.
But there was a second document in the envelope—an archived toxicology report from Victoria’s autopsy that Arthur had pulled using his high-level clearance, a report that had been buried deep in the police archives for five years.
Arthur’s eyes widened as he read the chemical analysis. Victoria’s body had trace amounts of Thallium—a slow-acting, odorless poison. And the signature authorizing the burial without a full forensic inquest was signed by Eleanor Sterling.
Arthur looked up, his eyes burning with a terrifying fury. He turned slowly toward his mother.
"You did it," Arthur whispered. "You killed her."
May you like
Eleanor's composure cracked for a fraction of a second before she smoothed her skirt. "Arthur, don't be ridiculous. That report is forged."
"It's from the state database, Mother," Arthur roared, the sound shaking the glass cabinets. "You poisoned my wife, tried to kill my children, and when they survived, you paid Margaret to keep them hidden so your crime would never be exposed!"
