Chapter 1 - THE CARDBOARD MANSION

The hook: He thought he was walking into a slum. He was walking into a tomb of secrets.
Max followed Lily. The rain had turned from a downpour into a freezing mist. They walked deeper into the East Side, past the crumbling brick shells of factories that hadn't seen a worker in decades.
"Here, mister," Lily whispered, stopping behind a rusted dumpster in an alleyway that smelled of wet ash and rot.
She pointed. There was no house. There was a stack of waterlogged moving boxes reinforced with duct tape, huddled against the side of a partially collapsed library. It was the saddest, most pathetic thing Max had ever seen.
"This is it?" Max asked, his voice thick with guilt.
"It’s safe," Lily said, her eyes bright with a pride that broke his heart. "The wind doesn't get in as much. And my mom said the library watches over us."
Max knelt, his Italian suit trousers soaking up the sludge. As he leaned in to hand her the money, he noticed something sticking out from under the bottom layer of cardboard. It wasn't trash. It was a thick, leather-bound folder, wrapped in plastic.
"What's that?" Max asked, pointing.

Lily’s expression hardened. "That’s why the bad men want us gone. That’s why they burn the buildings when we don't move fast enough."
Max pulled the plastic back. His breath hitched. It was a series of official city permits, mixed with private blueprints and emails—all stamped THORNTON ENTERPRISES.
