Chapter 3 - THE WOLF IN THE BOARDROOM

The hook: He walked into the meeting room with a briefcase full of dynamite.

Max didn't go to the cleaners. He didn't go home. He drove straight to Riverfront Plaza, wearing his muddy, ruined suit, the folder tucked under his arm like a weapon.

The boardroom was all glass and chrome. Harrison Wells was there, pouring scotch into crystal glasses, smiling that predator’s smile.

"Max! You look like you went through a war, my friend," Wells boomed. "Forget the storm. We’re about to make history. Sign the papers, and let’s get those bulldozers rolling by Monday morning."

Max sat down. He didn't take the drink. He didn't take the pen.

He slid the folder across the mahogany table.

"I visited the East Side today, Harrison," Max said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I met a girl named Lily. She lives in a cardboard box that sits exactly where you planned to start your 'renewal' on Monday."

Wells glanced at the papers. His smile didn't fade; it sharpened. "It’s a business, Max. Eggs have to be broken to make an omelet. You signed off on the margins. Don’t get sentimental now."

"I signed off on numbers," Max stood up, his chair clattering to the floor. "I didn't sign off on murder."
