Chapter 3 - THE SECRET VAULT OF THE WEST SIDEThe truck bounced over the cracked asphalt of Savannahâs industrial district, turning down a narrow, dead-end alley flanked by abandoned brick warehouses.

âWhere are we going?â Rebecca asked, gripping the dashboard as the truck rattled over a pothole. âYour construction site isnât down here.â
âItâs not a construction site,â Matthew replied, shifting gears smoothly.
He pulled up in front of an unassuming, rusted metal garage door with peeling gray paint. There were no signs, no security cameras, and no windows. It looked like an abandoned auto body shop forgotten by time.
Matthew killed the engine, hopped out, and punched a complex twelve-digit code into a heavy numeric keypad hidden behind a loose drainpipe.
Clank. Whir.
The massive steel door slowly lifted upward, groaning against its tracks.
Rebecca stepped out of the truck, following him insideâand stopped dead in her tracks, her jaw dropping open.
The interior was nothing like the exterior.
There was no grease, no old cars, no tools. Instead, the cavernous space was a state-of-the-art technological fortress. Rows of sleek, matte-black server racks hummed with rhythmic blue light. Giant holographic monitors lined the far wall, displaying global shipping routes, real-time financial market ticker tapes, and encrypted satellite feeds.
In the center of the room sat a massive mahogany desk draped with architectural blueprints and corporate asset portfolios.
âWhat is this place?â Rebecca breathed, her voice echoing in the vast, climate-controlled chamber.
âThis,â Matthew said, walking over to the desk and tossing his canvas tool bag onto it, âis the nerve center of Mercer Global Logistics. And, for the next forty-two days, our headquarters.â
Rebecca stepped backward, her back hitting a cool metal pillar. âMercer Global? Thatâs... thatâs the parent conglomerate that tried to buy out Belmont Maritime three years ago! My father rejected their bid! The CEO... the billionaire who owns half of American shipping... his name isââ
âMatthew Hale Mercer,â a voice chimed in from the shadows near the server racks.
Rebecca gasped, whirling around.
A young man in a crisp gray suit and wire-rimmed glasses stepped into the light, holding a sleek tablet. He looked at Matthew with a respectful nod, then turned to Rebecca with a polite, razor-sharp smile.
âGood morning, Mrs. Mercer. I am Julian Vance, Chief Legal Counsel for Mercer Holdings.â
Rebecca stared from Julian to Matthew, her mind spinning violently off its axis. The pieces of the puzzle began slamming together with terrifying speedâthe wealth, the calm demeanor, the absolute authority, Samuelâs terror, the background check coming up completely blank...
âYouâre him,â Rebecca whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of shock and white-hot fury. âYouâre the richest man in America. Youâre the phantom billionaire who bought up my fatherâs debt portfolios.â
Matthew walked slowly toward her, his footsteps quiet on the polished concrete floor. He stopped just a foot away, his tall frame towering over her, looking down with those unreadable grey eyes.
âI am,â Matthew admitted quietly.
âWhy?â Rebeccaâs voice cracked, tears of betrayal stinging her eyes. âWhy marry me? Why the charade with the work shirt and the broken teddy bear? Was this all some sick game to humiliate my family? To watch us grovel?â
âNo, Rebecca,â Matthew said, his voice suddenly dropping its rough working-class edge, revealing a rich, cultured, commanding tone that commanded absolute obedience. âI didnât marry you to humiliate your family. I married you to save it from itself.â
He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair from her cheek.
âYour mother was selling off Belmont Maritime piece by piece to corrupt syndicates like Samuel Whitmoreâs family. The board is corrupt. The company was already dead the day your father passed away.â
Matthew stepped back, gesturing to the massive holographic display behind him.
The screen flashed, displaying a red-and-white flowchart detailing every fraudulent transaction, every illegal offshore account, and every bribe paid by Samuel Whitmore and her own mother, Amelia Belmont.
âYour grandfatherâs trust wasnât just a financial safeguard, Rebecca,â Matthew said, his eyes locking onto hers with fierce intensity. âIt was a trap designed to find an heir with the courage to tear down the corrupt empire your mother built on lies.â
Rebecca stared at the screen, then back at Matthew. The shock wave of the revelation left her breathless.
âAnd you...â she whispered. âWhat do you want from me?â
May you like
Matthew crossed his arms, a faint, enigmatic smile touching the corners of his mouth.
âFor the next forty days, you play my poor, struggling construction workerâs wife. And together, we are going to wage war on everyone who ever tried to destroy your family.â
