Chapter 5 - THE BOARDROOM EXECUTIONThe mahogany boardroom of Belmont Maritime Supply smelled of old paper, expensive cigars, and suppressed panic.

Amelia Belmont sat at the head of the long table, looking immaculate in a tailored Chanel suit. To her right sat Samuel Whitmore, smirking like a cat that had cornered a canary. The five members of the board murmured nervously among themselves as the heavy double doors swung open.

All heads turned.

Rebecca walked in first, her head held high, wearing a sharp charcoal pantsuit that radiated absolute authority.

Behind her walked Matthew. He had discarded the faded work shirt for a simple, impeccably tailored black suit that fit his broad shoulders with lethal precision. He carried no tool bag today—only a slim, dark leather briefcase.

Amelia dropped her pen, her face flushing with furious disbelief.

“What is the meaning of this?” Amelia snapped, standing up abruptly from her chair. “What is that... laborer doing in our boardroom? Security!”

“Sit down, Mother,” Rebecca said, her voice cutting through the heavy air like a razor blade.

Amelia froze, staring at her daughter as if seeing a ghost. “Rebecca, have you lost your mind? Bring that—that vagrant in here?”

“He’s not a vagrant, Amelia,” a deep, resonant voice echoed from the doorway.

Julian Vance stepped into the room, sliding a thick stack of documents onto the mahogany table in front of the board members.

Samuel Whitmore frowned, standing up slowly. “Who the hell are you? Security, throw these bums out!”

“I wouldn’t do that, Samuel,” Matthew said softly, taking a seat at the far end of the table and lacing his fingers together.

Matthew looked around the room, his piercing grey eyes sweeping over every terrified board member.

“My name is Matthew Hale Mercer,” he said, his voice echoing in the silent room. “And as the majority stakeholder of Mercer Global Holdings—and your company’s primary creditor—I am calling this meeting to order.”

The color drained entirely from Samuel’s face. He grabbed the edge of the table, his knuckles turning white. “M-Mercer? That’s impossible. Mercer is a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate. You’re... you’re just a construction worker!”

“I build things, Samuel,” Matthew said smoothly, leaning forward. “And sometimes, I demolish things that are built on rotten foundations.”

Julian flipped open a document on the projector screen, illuminating the wall behind Amelia with glowing red financial data.

“These are the records of the illegal asset stripping executed by Samuel Whitmore and three members of this board over the past twenty-four months,” Julian announced clearly. “Including unauthorized transfers of company funds to offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.”

Amelia clutched her chest, her carefully constructed composure shattering completely. “T-this is forged! Lies!”

“It’s verified by federal regulators, Mother,” Rebecca said, stepping up to the head of the table and placing her hands firmly on the wood, staring directly down at Amelia. “The audit was completed last night. The warrants for arrest are already being processed.”

Samuel backed away toward the door, panic distorting his handsome features. “This is a setup! You can't do this—”

“Watch me,” Matthew murmured, standing up slowly.
