Chapter 3 - Whispers in the CorridorDawn broke over Manhattan, painting the sky in bruised shades of violet and gray.

In the servants’ quarters on the ground floor of the Hale estate, Elena Martinez could not sleep. Every creak of the old oak floorboards sounded like footsteps coming to strip away the only lifeline she had left.

She sat on the edge of the twin bed, watching Lily sleep peacefully, one tiny hand curled beneath her cheek.

Elena had taken this job after months of hiding from an abusive past, moving from cheap motel to cheap motel with nothing but a suitcase and a prayer. When Richard Hale had screamed at her yesterday, her heart had shattered. She had prepared herself for homelessness, for hunger, for another cycle of running.

Instead, the cold, untouchable king of New York had knelt on the floor and apologized.

“I want to.”

Those words had saved them. But Elena wasn’t naive. Wealthy men like the Hales had powerful enemies, and she knew instinctively that stepping into Richard’s orbit was like walking into the cage of a wounded tiger. You might comfort him, but the other beasts circling outside wouldn't care.

A soft tap at the door made her breath catch in her throat.

Elena crept across the room, her bare feet soundless against the hardwood, and pressed her eye to the peephole.

It wasn't Richard.

It was Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, holding a silver tray with a steaming mug of tea. But something in the older woman’s posture—the rigid spine, the darting eyes—signaled absolute terror.

Elena cracked the door open a few inches. "Mrs. Gable? Is everything alright?"

"Keep your voice down," Mrs. Gable whispered, her hands trembling so badly the teacup rattled against the silver. "You need to take Lily and leave through the service elevator right now."

Elena’s blood ran cold. "What? Why? Mr. Hale said—"

"Mr. Hale doesn't know what’s coming," Mrs. Gable interrupted, grabbing Elena’s wrist with surprising strength. "Mr. Peter was on the phone with the estate security chief an hour ago. They’ve flagged your employment file. They’re bringing in corporate auditors and a medical transport team by 9:00 AM under the guise of an emergency intervention. They’re going to frame you for trespassing and child endangerment to prove Richard is losing his mind."

"Frame us?" Elena gasped, her chest tightening. "Why would Peter do that?"

"Because Richard owns eighty-one percent of the voting shares, but if Richard is declared mentally incompetent due to 'severe trauma-induced hallucinations involving children,' Peter takes over as primary conservator," Mrs. Gable explained rapidly, her eyes wide with panic. "And once Peter is in control, people who know too much—or people who get in his way—tend to vanish. Go. Now. Out through the garden gate before the front security gates lock automatically."

Before Elena could answer, a heavy thud echoed from the main hallway upstairs.

Heavy, hurried footsteps began descending the grand staircase.

Too early.

"Hide!" Mrs. Gable hissed, pushing Elena back into the room.

Elena locked the door, scooped Lily into her arms—the child groggily blinking awake—and looked desperately around the small room. There was no back exit. Just a window leading out to the cobblestone courtyard, right below the terrace where Peter Hale’s personal security detail was already parking their black SUVs.
