Chapter 5 - The 5 Words That Unraveled an EmpirePeter’s face drained of color, his carefully constructed mask cracking instantly. "Richard... you... what are you doing here? You should be at the estate resting—"

"Resting?" Richard stepped into the room, his stride steady, his gaze locked entirely on his younger brother. "Resting while you orchestrate a quiet corporate execution behind my back? Did you really think I wouldn't notice the security logs being downloaded from my own private server at midnight?"

Peter forced a tight, nervous smile, attempting to regain control. "Brother, you're paranoid. Look at what you're doing—bringing strangers into the house, obsessing over ghosts. I'm just trying to save what's left of our family name!"

"Family name?" Richard stopped three feet from Peter, towering over him. "You don't care about the family name, Peter. You care about the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands that you’ve been funneling corporate development funds into for the last fourteen months."

Gasps erupted around the boardroom. Arthur Vance slammed his hands on the table. "Good God! Is this true?"

"It’s entirely true," a trembling voice spoke from the doorway.

Marcus Sterling stepped forward, holding a flash drive out toward the board. "I drafted the shell company contracts. Peter forced my hand under threat of destroying my practice. But this morning... this morning, something changed."

Sterling looked sideways at Richard, remembering the terrifying conversation in Richard’s private study at 6:00 AM.

Richard hadn't raged when he discovered the security breach. He had simply looked at the monitor, looked at Emma’s photograph, and then looked at Elena and Lily, who were safely hidden in the mansion’s secure panic room.

Then, Richard had turned to Sterling—who had been intercepted by Richard’s security team at his apartment—and asked a single question: “Do you want to go down alone, Marcus, or do you want to tell me what five words my brother told you when he bought your soul?”

Sterling had broken instantly.

"Peter didn't just want to declare me incompetent," Richard told the board, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "He wanted me locked away so he could liquidate the European assets and cover up the embezzlement before the annual audit next month."

Peter’s hands began to shake. He looked around the room, realizing every ally he had bought off had suddenly vanished into thin air. "He’s lying! He’s unstable! You saw the child—he’s losing his mind!"

"I was losing my mind," Richard corrected quietly, his eyes flashing with a sudden, searing intensity. "For three years, I lived in the dark. I let grief make me a ghost. I let you whisper in my ear that I was broken."

Richard stepped closer, leaning down so his face was inches from Peter’s ear.

"And then a three-year-old child sat on my floor, looked at my dead daughter’s picture, and whispered five words that broke the spell you cast over me."

Peter’s breath hitched. "What... what did she say?"

Richard’s lips curled into a cold, terrifying smile.

"She said: 'I can be your friend.'"

Richard straightened up, his voice echoing off the glass walls of the 50th floor. "And unlike you, Peter, she didn't want anything from me."
