Chapter 1 - The Cold Cradle

The black sedan pulled up to the private wing of St. Jude’s Maternity Hospital. Julian didn't wait for Marcus to open his door. He stepped out onto the damp pavement, the St. Barts tan suddenly feeling like a ridiculous mask. He adjusted his linen shirt, trying to shake off the lingering scent of Khloe’s coconut perfume, but it clung to him like a guilty conscience.

He walked through the sliding glass doors, his boots clicking sharply against the polished marble floor. The private wing was dead silent, a stark contrast to the bustling airport he had just left.

He approached the reception desk. A nurse in crisp blue scrubs was updating charts. She didn't look up immediately.

"Julian Pierce," he said, his voice carrying the usual authority of a man who owned half the real estate in Manhattan. "I’m here for my wife, Eleanor Pierce. Which room is she in?"

The nurse stopped writing. Her pen hovered over the paper. When she looked up, her expression wasn't the usual deferential smile reserved for the Pierce family. It was entirely blank. Cold.

"Mr. Pierce," she said slowly. "We were wondering when you would show up."

Julian frowned, his chest tightening slightly. "I’ve been out of the country on urgent business. Just tell me the room number."

"Room 402," the nurse said, her eyes dropping back to her chart. "But you won't find her there."

Julian didn't wait for an explanation. He turned and strode down the hallway, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead. Room 402 was at the very end of the corridor. The door was cracked open.

He pushed it wide.

The room was spotless. The bed was stripped of its sheets, the mattress bare and white. The bassinet beside the window—the one that should have held his son, the heir to the Pierce fortune—was completely empty. No blankets. No teddy bears. No signs of life.

The only thing in the entire room sat squarely in the middle of the bare mattress.

A single, silver flash drive.

Julian walked forward, his heart hammering against his ribs. He picked up the cold metal drive. His hands, usually so steady during multi-million dollar negotiations, were shaking.

Suddenly, a voice spoke from the doorway.

"They left fifteen days ago, Mr. Pierce."

Julian spun around. It was the head nurse, her arms crossed over her chest.

"What do you mean, fifteen days ago?" Julian demanded, his voice cracking. "She was due last week! Where is my wife? Where is my son?"

"Mrs. Pierce went into labor the day you left for St. Barts," the nurse said, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. "She delivered a healthy baby boy completely alone. No family. No husband. Just her and the staff. She signed the discharge papers the very next morning and left."

"Without telling me?" Julian roared. "I am the father! She can't just take my son!"

"She tried to call you, sir. We all did," the nurse replied, looking at his sun-bronzed face and the expensive vacation clothes with unmistakable disgust. "But your phone went straight to voicemail. Your mother, however, did come."

Julian froze. "My mother was here?"

"Oh, yes," the nurse said, turning to walk away. "Mrs. Margaret Pierce came with a team of lawyers and a nondisclosure agreement. I suggest you plug in that flash drive, Mr. Pierce. Your wife left a message. And I don't think it's a love letter."

Julian’s blood ran cold. He grabbed his laptop from his briefcase, slammed it onto the overbed table, and shoved the flash drive into the USB port.

A single video file popped up. The title was: The Price of Luck.

He clicked play.

The screen flickered to life, revealing Eleanor sitting in the hospital bed, holding a tiny bundle wrapped in a blue blanket. She looked exhausted, pale, and entirely hollow—except for her eyes. Her eyes were burning with a fierce, terrifying clarity.

"Hello, Julian," Eleanor said, her voice steady and quiet. "If you're watching this, it means you've finally decided to come home from your honeymoon. I hope the sand was warm. Because the world you left behind just froze over."

She leaned closer to the camera, her gaze piercing through the screen.

"Your mother came to this room yesterday. She offered me five million dollars to sign full custody of our son over to the Pierce family, divorce you quietly, and vanish. She told me an office worker from nowhere should be grateful for the payoff."

Eleanor smiled, a sharp, dangerous expression Julian had never seen on her face before.

"I took the money, Julian. I signed the papers. But I didn't give her the baby."

Julian gasped, his breath catching in his throat.

"By the time you see this," Eleanor whispered, "the Pierce family empire will be crumbling. Look out the window, Julian. It’s already started."

Before Julian could process her words, his phone exploded with notifications. Dozens of headlines flashed across his screen simultaneously.

BREAKING: Pierce Holdings Stocks Plummet 40% After Massive Insider Trading Leak. PIERCE FAMILY SCANDAL: Secret Offshore Accounts Exposed by Anonymous Whistleblower.

Julian’s hands shook so violently he dropped the phone. He looked back at the video.

Eleanor was holding up a document. It wasn't a custody agreement. It was a certified copy of Julian’s private financial ledgers—the illegal ones his family had hidden for decades.

"You thought I was just a quiet, lucky girl who didn't notice anything," Eleanor said softly. "But I notice everything, Julian. Thank you for the five million dollars. It’s going to fund a very long, very comfortable life for me and our son. You will never see him. And by tomorrow, you won't even have a company left to give him."

The video cut to black.

Julian stood frozen in the empty room, the silence suffocating him. Suddenly, his phone rang. It was his mother, Margaret.

He answered it, his voice barely a whisper. "Mother?"

"Julian! Where are you?!" Margaret screamed into the phone, her voice frantic, completely stripped of her usual high-society composure. "The FBI is at the penthouse! They have a warrant! Eleanor... that bitch ruined us! Where is the baby?!"

Julian looked down at the empty bassinet.

HOOK: He opened his mouth to speak, but the sound of heavy footsteps echoed down the hospital hallway. He turned to the door just as two federal agents in dark suits stepped into the room, shields raised.

"Julian Pierce? You're under arrest for financial fraud and conspiracy."
