Chapter 5 - The Alliance in the Dark

"Wait! You have the wrong man!" Eleanor screamed, throwing her body in front of Julian, shielding him from the tactical officers. "It’s Marcus! Marcus Hayes did all of this! He has my son!"
The FBI Special Agent in charge, a stern woman named Miller, stepped through the line of officers, her weapon lowered but her expression entirely untrustgiving. She looked at Marcus, who was still bleeding on the floor, and then at Julian, whose clothes were torn and covered in dust.
"Mr. Hayes called us three hours ago," Agent Miller said coldly. "He claimed Julian Pierce broke his house arrest, kidnapped his own wife from her hiding place, and was attempting to extort the family's remaining offshore funds to flee the country. Looks to me like we caught you red-handed, Pierce."
Marcus put on a masterclass of deception. He groaned, holding his ribs, looking up at the agents with terror in his eyes. "Thank God you're here... he’s insane. He tried to kill me because I wouldn't help him transfer the Zurich funds. He’s got the codes in his pocket right now!"
Agent Miller gestured to an officer, who stepped forward and searched Julian, pulling the crumpled piece of paper from his jacket. She looked at the code, then at Julian. "Case closed. Secure the scene. Take them all in."
"No! Look at the blanket!" Julian yelled, pointing to the burlap sacks. "Look at the white noise machine! Marcus set this up! He kidnapped my son, Liam Pierce! He’s hiding him somewhere right now, and if you arrest me instead of finding him, my son is going to die!"
Agent Miller paused. She walked over to the blue blanket, kicking it open with her boot to reveal the plastic machine. She frowned, her eyes shifting from Marcus to Julian, and finally to Eleanor, who was trembling, her face heavily bruised—bruises that couldn't have been caused by Julian, given the timeline of his house arrest break.
Miller walked over to Marcus. She knelt down, grabbing his chin tightly. "Where’s the infant, Marcus?"
"I don't know what he's talking about!" Marcus stammered, his composure cracking slightly. "Eleanor probably hid the kid before Julian grabbed her!"
Eleanor stepped forward, her voice ringing with a fierce, absolute conviction. "Marcus is lying. Check his phone. Check his GPS history. He brought me here from a cabin near Lake George. He has a partner. He kept talking to someone on an encrypted app called Whisper."
Agent Miller stared at Eleanor for a long, tense moment. She stood up and turned to her officers. "Secure Marcus Hayes. Search his vehicle. Extract every byte of data from his devices. Now." She turned back to Julian and Eleanor. "As for you two... you're coming with me to the field office. And you better pray your story holds up, Pierce, because if that baby isn't found, you're looking at a lifetime behind bars."
An hour later, Julian and Eleanor sat side by side in the back of an FBI transport vehicle. The silence between them was heavy, filled with years of unspoken words, neglect, and the terrifying reality of their present situation.
Julian looked down at his hands, then turned to his wife. "Eleanor... I’m sorry."
Eleanor didn't look at him. She stared out the scratched window at the dark highway. "For which part, Julian? The affair? The vacation while I was giving birth alone? Or the fact that your family's greed turned our lives into a war zone?"
"All of it," Julian said, his voice cracking with genuine emotion. "You were right. I thought you were just a convenience. I thought I could ignore you. I didn't see how strong you were. I didn't see you."
"I didn't want to destroy you, Julian," Eleanor whispered, a single tear slipping down her cheek. "I just wanted to protect my son from your mother. I wanted him to have a life away from the Pierce name. I thought if I took the money and the shares, we could vanish. I didn't know Marcus was using me."
Julian reached out, his hand hesitating before gently covering hers. This time, she didn't pull away. Her hand was ice cold, shaking.
"We’re going to find him, Eleanor. I promise you. I don't care about the company, the money, or the name anymore. I just want our boy."
The vehicle arrived at the Newburgh FBI Field Office. They were escorted into a secure briefing room. Ten minutes later, Agent Miller walked in, tossing a tablet onto the table. Her face was grim.
"Your wife was right," Miller said, looking at Julian. "We cracked Hayes’s phone. He wasn't working alone. He was coordinating with someone who had access to your home, someone who knew exactly when you would be returning from St. Barts, and someone who could move a newborn child without raising suspicion in high-society circles."
Julian’s chest tightened. "Who?"

HOOK: Agent Miller tapped the tablet screen, bringing up a series of encrypted text messages and a bank transfer receipt originating from a private account.
"The partner who currently has your son at a private estate in Connecticut isn't a criminal associate, Mr. Pierce. It’s Khloe Harper. And according to these logs, she didn't just help Marcus—she’s the one who suggested kidnapping the child to extort your family from the very beginning."
