Chapter 4 - The Bitter Truth

Julian froze, his boots glued to the dusty concrete floor. His eyes darted from the gun in Marcus’s hand to the tiny bundle wrapped in blue blankets, and finally to Eleanor. Her eyes were wide with terror, shaking her head frantically against the gag tied around her mouth.

"Marcus," Julian said, forcing his voice to remain steady, though his heart was hammering a frantic rhythm. "You’ve been with me for ten years. You handled my schedules, my properties, my life. Why are you doing this?"

"Ten years, Julian," Marcus spat, the polite, submissive secretary persona completely evaporating into pure, unadulterated venom. "Ten years of watching you throw away millions on yachts, watches, and expensive mistresses while I lived in a cramped apartment in Queens, taking your late-night calls and cleaning up your messes. You didn't even notice when I started looking into your private files three years ago."

Julian’s eyes widened. "The financial leaks... it wasn't Eleanor?"

Marcus laughed, a harsh, echoing sound in the empty warehouse. "Eleanor? Please. She’s smart, but she didn't have the clearance to access the secondary encrypted servers. I found the offshore accounts, Julian. I compiled the ledgers. But I needed a scapegoat. I needed someone the FBI would immediately believe had a motive to destroy you."

He tightened his grip on the gun, pointing it directly at Eleanor’s temple.

"I approached Eleanor months ago. I told her I could help her get evidence for a divorce settlement. I used her, Julian. I planted the files on her laptop while she was at her prenatal appointments. I made sure she looked like the mastermind. She thought she was taking twenty percent of the company to secure her son's future, but she didn't realize that I control the shell companies that trust fund is tied to. She was just my front woman."

Eleanor let out a muffled sob, tears streaming down her bruised cheeks.

"But then your mother threw a wrench in the gears by offering that five million cash payoff," Marcus continued, his eyes gleaming with greed. "Five million dollars sitting in a private, untraceable account Eleanor set up. Plus the Zurich vault codes your family keeps hidden. I realized I could have it all. The Pierce fortune, entirely wiped clean, redirected to me. And the best part? The world will think Julian Pierce killed his wife and son in a fit of rage after breaking house arrest."

"You won't get away with this, Marcus," Julian said, stepping forward.

"Don't move!" Marcus barked, cocking the pistol. "Drop the Zurich codes on the floor. Now!"

Julian slowly reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the crumpled piece of paper he had torn from his mother's notebook. He dropped it onto the dust between them.

"There it is," Julian said. "Take it. Just give me the baby. Let Eleanor go."

Marcus kept the gun trained on Eleanor as he knelt down, his eyes never leaving Julian, and scooped up the paper with his free hand. He glanced at the twenty-four-digit code and smiled broadly.

"Perfect. The final piece of the puzzle."

Marcus stood up, stepping away from Eleanor, still holding the baby tightly against his chest. He looked at the child, a sick, satisfied grin on his face. "A beautiful boy, Julian. A shame he’ll never get to grow up a billionaire."

Marcus raised the gun, pointing it directly at Julian’s chest.

In that split second, Eleanor didn't hesitate. With a burst of desperate, maternal strength, she slammed her weight backward, tilting the heavy wooden chair she was tied to right into Marcus’s legs.

Marcus lost his balance, stumbling backward with a shout. The gun fired, the loud BANG echoing through the warehouse, the bullet whistling past Julian’s ear and shattering a window high above.

Julian lunged forward like a feral animal. He tackled Marcus to the ground, the two men crashing into the dust. Julian slammed his fist into Marcus’s face, once, twice, pouring all his rage, guilt, and desperation into the blows. The gun skittered across the concrete, sliding into the darkness.

Marcus, dazed and bleeding, tried to scramble away, but Julian pinned him down, grabbing him by the collar.

"Where is the baby?!" Julian roared.

During the scuffle, the blue bundle had fallen onto a pile of soft burlap sacks nearby. Julian let go of Marcus and sprinted over to the bundle, his heart stopped in his chest. He reached down and gently pulled back the blanket.

He froze.

It wasn't a baby.

Inside the blanket was a heavy, battery-operated medical white-noise machine, wrapped in a infant's onesie to give it weight.

Julian’s breath hitched. He spun around to Marcus, who was sitting up against a concrete pillar, wiping blood from his nose, laughing hysterically.

"You think I’m stupid, Julian?" Marcus wheezed, his teeth stained red. "You think I’d bring the real golden goose to a shakedown? The kid isn't here."

Julian ran back to Eleanor, quickly ripping the gag from her mouth and untying the ropes binding her wrists. The moment she was free, she grabbed Julian’s lapels, her face pale with terror.

"Julian... he took him," she sobbed, her voice raw. "Marcus took Liam from the safehouse two hours ago. But he didn't bring him here. He left him with someone else."

"Who, Eleanor?! Who has our son?!"

Before Eleanor could answer, the heavy warehouse doors were kicked wide open. The glare of red and blue police lights flooded the dark space, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air.

HOOK: A dozen tactical officers poured into the room, weapons raised, led by an FBI agent. But they didn't head for Marcus. They surrounded Julian and Eleanor, their red laser sights dotting Julian’s chest.

"FBI! Hands in the air! Julian Pierce, you are under arrest for federal flight, kidnapping, and extortion!"
