Chapter 2 - The Underworld Underground

Hook: They took my mansion, my money, and my name. But they forgot one thing: I built this city on the bones of men who tried to cross me.

The hidden service tunnel led out to an old storm drain half a mile from the main estate. Rain was pouring in sheets, washing away the blood and sweat as Vincent and Elena emerged into the bleak, industrial outskirts of the city.

Vincent stood under the pouring rain, his bespoke suit ruined, his empire stolen in a single night. He turned to Elena, who was wiping the mud off her boots.

"You've been in my house for three years," Vincent demanded, his eyes narrowing. "You knew about Marcus. You knew about my wife. You aren't a maid, and you aren't a common mercenary. Who do you work for?"

Elena stopped and looked up, her dark eyes reflecting the distant city lights. "My name is Elena Rostova. Twelve years ago, your syndicate wiped out a small shipping operation in the docks. You thought it was a rival gang. It wasn't. It was my family. I took this job to get close enough to put a bullet in your head, Vincent."

Vincent instinctively reached for a weapon he didn't have, but Elena didn't raise her gun.

"If you wanted me dead, why didn't you let Marcus finish the job tonight?" Vincent asked, his voice guarded.

"Because quick death is too good for Marcus," Elena said, her voice dripping with venom. "He didn't just kill your wife; he sold out my family's remaining assets to the Russian mob to fund his coup. If Marcus takes over the city, he’ll turn it into a slaughterhouse. I want my revenge, and you want your throne. We have a common enemy. After Marcus is dead, we can settle our own score."

Vincent stared at her for a long moment. In the underworld, an enemy with a shared grievance was often more reliable than a brother with a shared bloodline. "Where do we go? My bank accounts will be frozen by morning. My loyal capos will be hunted down."

"Marcus thinks he knows all your safehouses," Elena said, pulling a burner phone from her pocket. "But he doesn't know about the basement beneath the old St. Jude’s orphanage. It’s neutral ground, abandoned ten years ago."

Two hours later, they were holed up in the concrete basement of the decaying orphanage. The air smelled of damp concrete and forgotten history. Elena laid out a map of the city on a rusted metal table, lit only by a single battery-powered lantern.

"Marcus has already called an emergency meeting of the Commission for tomorrow night," Elena explained, pointing to a downtown high-rise. "He’s going to present fake evidence claiming the Moretti family killed you, and he will demand total control to launch a retaliation war. If the Commission buys it, he gets the backing of all five families."

"He won't get it," Vincent growled, leaning over the table. "Not if I walk into that room alive."

"You won't make it to the front door," Elena countered. "Marcus has hit squads patrolling every block around the high-rise. The moment you show your face, you're dead. We need to cut off his legs before we take his head. We need to destroy his supply chain."

Vincent smirked, a dangerous, predatory glint returning to his eyes. "Marcus always was greedy. He keeps his operational cash in a secure vault at the shipping yards—the very yards your family used to own, Elena. If we take that money, he can't pay the mercenaries he hired to lock down the city."

"Then we start there," Elena said, racking the slide of her 9mm. "Let's go rob your nephew."
