Chapter 2 - THE RECKONING IN THE HALLWAY

Julian stumbled slightly as the door gave way, his eyes bloodshot and wide with fury. Behind him, Chloe stood in the hallway, clutching a silver-plated candlestick like a weapon, her face twisted into a mask of ugly panic.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?!" Chloe shrieked, pointing the heavy candlestick straight at my face. "Locking yourselves in the bathroom? Spying on family business? Julian, drag her out of here before she ruins everything!"
Julian lunged forward, his hand clawing out to grab my shoulder and shove me aside. "You arrogant bitch," he hissed, his face inches from mine. "You think you can just march in here after three years of ghosting us and start giving orders? This is our house. She is our dependent. Get out of our way before we throw you out on the street!"
I didn't move an inch. I stood my ground like a concrete pillar.
"Touch me, Julian," I said softly, my voice cutting through the humid air of the bathroom like a scalpel. "Go ahead. Assault an officer of the court on a recorded line. Let's see how that looks on your permanent record."
He froze, his hand hovering mid-air. "What are you talking about?"
"I’m talking about the fact that your game is over," I said, stepping forward and forcing him back a step into the hallway. "The lake cabin? Sold under duress using a forged power of attorney. The investment accounts? Drained into an offshore shell corporation registered in your name, Chloe. And the physical abuse documented on high-definition video with timestamps? That’s going to buy you both about twenty years in a federal penitentiary."
Chloe let out a hysterical, high-pitched laugh, though her hands were shaking so violently she nearly dropped the candlestick. "Prove it! No one will ever believe an old woman with dementia! The judges, the doctors, the entire town knows she’s losing her mind! You have nothing!"
"I have everything," a calm, chilling voice echoed from the front entryway downstairs.
Heavy, synchronized boots echoed up the hardwood stairs. Within three seconds, four heavily armed State Troopers in tactical gear flooded the hallway, their badges gleaming under the hallway lights, followed closely by local paramedics with a mobile stretcher.

Julian’s face turned the color of curdled milk. He turned his head slowly, looking down the barrel of a trooper’s tactical rifle.
"Julian Vance? And Chloe Vance?" the lead captain asked, pulling out a laminated warrant. "You are under arrest for aggravated elder abuse, financial exploitation, grand larceny, and unlawful imprisonment. Hands behind your back. Now."
