Two days later, back at my mother's ransacked house—now cordoned off as a federal crime scene—a team of forensic accountants and state investigators were tearing through Julian and Chloe’s home office.
I stood by the mahogany desk, watching an investigator pull a hidden wall safe out from behind a faux-wood panel.
"You were right, Assistant Attorney General Vance," the lead investigator said, sliding a thick stack of documents across the desk. "This goes much deeper than just your mother’s accounts. Look at these offshore wire transfers."
I scanned the ledger. My eyebrows arched in professional shock.
It wasn't just my mother’s lake cabin and retirement funds. Julian and Chloe had been running a massive, multi-million-dollar elder financial exploitation ring across three different counties. They had targeted at least six other wealthy, vulnerable elderly individuals, using forged power-of-attorney documents, intimidation, and pharmaceutical sedation to siphon away millions of dollars in real estate and liquid assets.
"They weren't just rogue relatives," I murmured, a cold realization washing over me. "They were professional grifters operating under the cover of respectability."
"And your mother was their crown jewel because she had the largest unencumbered estate," the investigator added. "If you hadn't shown up unannounced for her birthday and looked beneath that coat... they would have quietly institutionalized her in a private psychiatric facility by the end of the month, declared her legally incompetent, and liquidated everything permanently."

"Get copies of all these files over to the FBI's white-collar crime division immediately," I instructed, my executive authority snapping into place. "And pull every single phone record, bank statement, and notary signature associated with Chloe's firm. We're going to tear their entire criminal syndicate apart down to the studs."
