CHAPTER 1 — THE WEDDING THAT BECAME A PUBLIC EXECUTION

The wedding was supposed to be the most glamorous event of the year.

Golden chandeliers hung from ancient oak trees. Thousands of white roses surrounded the outdoor estate. Crystal glasses sparkled beneath strings of warm lights while a live orchestra filled the evening air with soft music.

Every guest wore designer suits and custom-made gowns.

Luxury cars lined the entrance.

Business tycoons, politicians, celebrities, and investors gathered to celebrate the marriage between Vanessa Whitmore—the beautiful daughter of one of the city's wealthiest families—and Julian Harper, the rising executive destined to inherit his family's billion-dollar corporation.

Everything was flawless.

Everything...

Except for one table.

Near the very back of the reception sat Clara.

Vanessa's younger sister.

She wore a simple white dress she had bought months earlier.

No diamonds.

No expensive makeup.

No designer handbag.

Only a tiny silver wedding ring rested on her finger.

Some guests whispered.

Others pretended not to notice.

But everyone knew.

Clara had disappointed the Whitmore family.

Six months earlier she had secretly married a man nobody had ever heard of.

Arthur.

No famous last name.

No social media.

No family fortune.

No luxury cars.

No interviews.

No public appearances.

To Vanessa, that meant only one thing.

Poor.

And tonight...

She intended to make sure everyone remembered it.

As the applause settled after the ceremony, Vanessa accepted the microphone with a radiant smile.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

The crowd grew silent.

"I'd like to thank everyone for making this the happiest day of my life."

More applause.

Then her smile slowly changed.

"There is one person I especially want to thank."

She pointed across the reception.

Straight toward Clara.

"My dear little sister."

Every head turned.

Clara forced an uncomfortable smile.

Vanessa continued sweetly.

"Growing up... everyone said Clara was kinder than me."

A few guests laughed politely.

"They also said she had a better heart."

Another pause.

"But apparently..."

Vanessa shrugged dramatically.

"She doesn't have very good judgment."

The crowd chuckled.

Clara lowered her eyes.

Vanessa wasn't finished.

"You see..."

"My little sister married for love."

She almost laughed saying the last two words.

"What a romantic idea."

More laughter echoed through the venue.

"My husband and I built a future."

"But Clara..."

Vanessa looked around proudly.

"...married a penniless nobody."

The laughter became louder.

Several guests openly smirked.

One woman whispered,

"Poor thing."

Another replied,

"I heard he couldn't even afford their honeymoon."

Someone else laughed.

"Maybe he walked here."

Clara clenched her hands beneath the table.

Her face burned with humiliation.

She had promised herself she wouldn't cry.

Not today.

Not here.

But tears slowly filled her eyes anyway.

Vanessa noticed.

Perfect.

Exactly what she wanted.

"Oh..."

Vanessa pretended to look around.

"Where is this mysterious husband?"

She raised one hand toward the entrance.

"Everyone..."

"Meet the man who stole my sister's heart..."

"...and apparently left her bank account empty."

The orchestra stopped playing.

The massive wooden gates slowly opened.

Footsteps echoed across the marble walkway.

One man entered.

Black tailored suit.

Perfect posture.

Calm expression.

No bodyguards.

No flashy jewelry.

No expensive watch.

He walked quietly.

Without looking left or right.

Without acknowledging the whispers.

Without defending himself.

The guests laughed.

"He actually came."

"He has nerve."

"Poor guy."

Julian casually glanced toward the entrance.

Then...

Everything changed.

His smile disappeared.

His champagne glass slipped from his hand.

CRASH.

The glass shattered across the marble floor.

His breathing stopped.

His face became completely white.

"No..."

he whispered.

Vanessa frowned.

"What?"

Julian kept staring.

His hands started shaking uncontrollably.

"No... no... this can't be happening..."

Vanessa laughed softly.

"What is wrong with you?"

Julian grabbed her arm so tightly that she winced.

"Stop."

"What?"

"Put the microphone down."

She looked confused.

"Why?"

His voice barely escaped.

"Because..."

"...that's Arthur Vance."

Vanessa blinked.

"So?"

Julian swallowed.

Every word felt heavier than the last.

"Arthur Vance..."

"...owns my company."

The entire world seemed to stop.

Vanessa laughed.

"You're joking."

Julian wasn't laughing.

His lips trembled.

"My father answers to him."

"My grandfather answers to him."

"Our entire family fortune depends on his signature."

"And..."

Julian looked at Arthur again.

"...I've only seen him twice in my life."

The laughter around the wedding slowly faded.

Because people had started recognizing him.

Phones disappeared into pockets.

Executives suddenly stood.

Investors exchanged frightened looks.

Someone quietly whispered,

"My God..."

"It really is him."

Arthur Vance.

The billionaire nobody had recognized.

The man every CEO feared.

And the husband Vanessa had just called...

Penniless.

Arthur stopped beside Clara.

He looked at the tears rolling down her face.

Without saying a word...

He removed his expensive black jacket.

Carefully placed it over her shoulders.

Then gently wiped away a tear from her cheek.

His voice was soft.

"Did they hurt you?"

Clara nodded once.

Arthur smiled sadly.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

The silence became unbearable.

He looked directly into her eyes.

Then said calmly...

"Please..."

"Continue."

"I'd love to hear more about my finances."

The wedding had just become a battlefield.

And no one knew...

The worst was still coming.
