CHAPTER 2 — THE BILLIONAIRE THEY TRIED TO HUMILIATE

No one laughed anymore.

The orchestra remained silent.

Even the wind seemed to stop moving through the white roses.

Vanessa stood frozen, still gripping the microphone, but now her confidence had disappeared. The smile she had practiced for weeks slowly melted into confusion.

"This... this isn't funny," she stammered.

Arthur looked at her without anger.

Sometimes calmness is far more terrifying than rage.

Julian stepped away from his bride as if standing beside her had suddenly become dangerous.

His father, Richard Harper, rushed toward Arthur so quickly that he nearly stumbled over the wedding decorations.

"Mr. Vance..." he said, lowering his head. "I had no idea you were coming."

Arthur replied politely.

"You weren't invited."

The words landed like thunder.

Several board members who had attended the wedding immediately recognized him. Within seconds, whispers swept across the reception.

"That's really Arthur Vance..."

"The founder of Vance Global Holdings..."

"The man who bought Harper Industries three years ago..."

"I've only seen him in private shareholder meetings."

Vanessa's heart pounded.

She turned toward Julian.

"You never told me your company had another owner."

Julian looked at her in disbelief.

"Because no one talks about him."

"He doesn't attend parties."

"He doesn't appear in magazines."

"He doesn't care about publicity."

"He only cares about results."

Richard Harper suddenly spoke.

"Arthur owns fifty-one percent of everything our family has built."

Vanessa felt the ground disappear beneath her feet.

She looked back at Clara.

Her quiet younger sister.

The woman she had mocked in front of hundreds of guests.

Married...

To the most powerful man in the entire room.

Arthur gently held Clara's hand.

"I asked you not to come today."

Clara smiled sadly.

"I hoped my sister would finally accept me."

Arthur looked around at the guests.

"I see she made her decision."

Vanessa forced herself to speak.

"You hid who you were."

Arthur nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to know who respected people without checking their bank account first."

He paused.

"Today answered that question."

The silence became unbearable.

Arthur turned toward Julian.

"I reviewed your quarterly reports this morning."

Julian's face lost all color.

Arthur continued.

"I was planning to announce several executive promotions next week."

Another pause.

"Those promotions are canceled."

Richard Harper immediately stepped forward.

"Please, Mr. Vance..."

Arthur raised one finger.

"I wasn't finished."

He looked directly at Julian.

"I also reviewed your leadership evaluations."

Julian swallowed hard.

"They were disappointing."

Vanessa grabbed Julian's arm.

"Say something!"

But Julian couldn't.

Because he already understood.

His career had just ended.

Arthur slowly removed a small envelope from his pocket.

"I actually brought this today."

Richard recognized it instantly.

The company's new executive appointment letter.

Arthur tore it in half.

Right in front of everyone.

Gasps echoed across the wedding.

"No..." Julian whispered.

Arthur looked at him calmly.

"A leader who cannot recognize character without wealth has no business leading people."

Then he turned toward Clara.

"Shall we go home?"

Before leaving, Arthur looked back one final time.

"I hope today's wedding becomes unforgettable."

It certainly would.

Because within hours...

May you like

Every guest would discover the truth behind Arthur and Clara's marriage.

And Vanessa's nightmare was only beginning.
