Chapter 1 - The Portrait of a Monster

“That baby... is yours, Valeria.”The silence that blanketed the grand ballroom of the San Miguel de Allende hacienda was not merely quiet; it was suffocating. The soft clinking of crystal flutes had vanished, replaced by the heavy, rhythmic patter of rain against the high stained-glass windows. Five hundred of Mexico’s most powerful elite sat frozen, their eyes darting between the shivering, mud-splattered eight-year-old girl and the radiant bride, Valeria, whose face had instantly drained of all color.
The little girl, whose name was Sofia, did not look at the security guards who hovered like vultures at the edge of the light. Her gaze was locked onto Valeria.
"Who are you?" Alejandro repeated, his voice cracking slightly. He reached out to touch his new wife’s arm, but Valeria flinched violently, pulling away as if his touch burned her. "Valeria, do you know this child?"
"No! Of course not!" Valeria stammered, her voice high and breathless. She clutched the lace of her multimillion-peso designer gown, her diamond rings catching the light of the chandeliers. "She’s a beggar! Someone must have paid her to ruin our wedding. Alejandro, please, call security! Get her out of here! She’s ruining everything!"
But Sofia stepped closer. The wet wool sweater wrapped around the newborn baby in her arms dripped muddy water onto the pristine white carpet.
"You're a liar," Sofia said, her voice ringing clearly through the microphone that still hung active over the head table. "You know exactly who I am, Valeria. And you know who this baby is."
Sofia gently parted the wet fabric of the sweater, revealing the tiny, pale face of the infant. The baby let out a weak, raspy cry, shivering against the chill of the air conditioning. Around the baby’s neck, hanging from a simple black string, was a distinctive silver medallion.
It was an antique, engraved with a delicate, blooming dahlia—the exact family crest of the legendary Villa-Lobos tequila empire, Valeria’s family.
Alejandro gasped. His eyes traveled from the medallion to Valeria’s face. "Valeria... that’s your grandmother’s medallion. You told me it was lost in a robbery last year."
"It was!" Valeria screamed, her eyes widening in panic. "They stole it! This girl must be part of the gang that robbed our estate!"
Sofia shook her head, a tear finally cutting a clean path through the dirt on her cheek. "You didn't lose it, Valeria. You gave it to my mother, Elena, nine months ago. You gave it to her as a promise. A promise that you would pay for her medical treatment if she kept your secret. But when she got too sick to speak, you stopped sending the money. You left us to starve in the slums of Querétaro."
Whispers erupted like wildfire through the ballroom. Valeria’s mother, Doña Camila, stood up from her front-row table, her face twisted in rage. "This is absurd! My daughter is a saint! Guards, drag this gutter rat out of here before I have you all fired!"
"Touch her, and I will make sure the police hear everything!" Sofia yelled back, her young voice carrying a terrifying authority. She reached into her torn pocket and pulled out a damp, folded piece of paper, holding it up. "I have the birth certificate. The mother is Elena Torres. But the father’s name isn't blank, Alejandro."
Alejandro stepped down from the dais, ignoring the frantic pleas of his mother-in-law. His heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He reached out and took the damp paper from Sofia’s hand.
As his eyes scanned the elegant, official print of the Mexican registry, his hands began to shake violently. He didn't look at the father's name. His eyes were glued to the mother's medical records attached to the back.
"This... this can't be," Alejandro whispered, his voice barely a breath.
"Alejandro, what does it say?" his father, Don Roberto, demanded, stepping forward with the authority of a patriarch.
Alejandro slowly turned to face his bride. The love in his eyes had been completely extinguished, replaced by a cold, hollow horror.
"Valeria," Alejandro said, his voice deadly quiet. "This baby didn't belong to a surrogate. This baby was born three weeks ago. And the medical record says..." He swallowed hard, the words choking him. "...that the biological mother had a surrogate carrier, but the egg donor... the biological mother of this child... is you."
Valeria took a step back, her heel catching on the train of her dress. She stumbled, barely catching herself on the edge of the table.
"But that's not the worst part," Alejandro whispered, his eyes filling with tears of betrayal. "The father listed on this certificate... Valeria, why is the father listed as my brother, Mateo?"
A collective gasp echoed through the hall. Everyone turned to look at the empty chair at the head table—the seat reserved for Mateo, Alejandro’s charismatic younger brother, who had mysteriously gone missing two weeks prior, supposedly on a 'business trip' to Europe.
Sofia pointed her small, trembling finger directly at Valeria. "My mother died in the hospital three days ago because you stopped paying her bills to hide this. But before she died, she told me the truth. She said you and Mateo wanted to steal the family fortune. And when Mateo tried to back out..."
May you like
Sofia paused, her eyes darkening with a maturity that sent a chill down everyone’s spine.
"...you made sure he would never speak again."
