Chapter 5 - The Price of Loyalty

“You’re not my father anymore. You’re just a target.”"You think you can destroy me, Alejandro?" Don Roberto laughed, a low, rumbling sound that filled the empty ballroom. "With what? The word of a dead housekeeper? A traumatized eight-year-old girl? I have the best lawyers in the country. By tomorrow morning, the wire transfer will be explained away as a charitable donation to a sick employee. The police have no proof that I had anything to do with Elena’s death or Mateo’s murder."

Detective Ramirez stepped forward, her hand resting on the holster of her gun. "Don Roberto, you are under estimation of our resources. We have already dispatched a team to search your office and your private residence."

"Search all you want, Detective," Don Roberto sneered, his confidence unwavering. "You will find nothing. I have spent forty years cleaning up messes. I do not leave paper trails."

"Maybe you don't," Alejandro said, his voice suddenly calm, a dangerous coldness settling over him. "But Mateo did."

Don Roberto’s smile faltered. "What are you talking about?"

"Mateo knew what you were, Father," Alejandro said, pulling out a small, silver USB drive from his inner jacket pocket. "A week before he disappeared, he came to my office. He was nervous, looking over his shoulder. He told me that if anything ever happened to him, I should look inside the antique grandfather clock in our childhood bedroom. He said he kept a journal of all your secret transactions, your payoffs, and your... 'accidents' over the years."

Alejandro held up the USB drive.

"I went to the bedroom this morning, before the wedding, to clear my head. I found his diary. I copied everything onto this drive. The payoffs to judges, the illegal land seizures, the names of the hitmen you hired to eliminate your competitors. It’s all here, Father. Every single piece of dirty laundry you’ve accumulated over forty years."

Don Roberto’s face turned an ugly, mottled purple. The calm, sophisticated patriarch vanished, replaced by a desperate, cornered predator.

"Give that to me, Alejandro!" Don Roberto roared, lunging forward to grab the drive.

But two police officers instantly tackled the older man to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back. Don Roberto struggled violently, his face pressed against the wet, dirty carpet where his son’s blood had once been spilled in metaphor, and where his youngest son’s killer had stood.

"Let me go! Alejandro, you are destroying your own blood! You are destroying your legacy!" Don Roberto screamed, his voice cracking with desperation.

"You destroyed this family the moment you put money over your children's lives," Alejandro said, looking down at his father with a mixture of pity and disgust. "You allowed my brother to be murdered. You murdered a mother who was trying to save her child. You are not my father. You are just a criminal who needs to pay for his crimes."

Detective Ramirez took the USB drive from Alejandro’s hand, nodding with respect. "Thank you, Mr. Ruiz. This will be enough to put him away for the rest of his life."

As the officers dragged Don Roberto out of the ballroom, his curses and screams fading into the sound of the rain, Alejandro fell back into a chair, completely exhausted. The silence returned to the hacienda, but this time, it was a clean silence. The storm outside was beginning to clear, the first light of dawn breaking through the dark clouds.

But Alejandro knew his task was not yet finished.

He stood up, adjusted his ruined tuxedo, and walked out of the hacienda. He had one final place to go.
