Chapter 4 - The Shadow in the Sanctuary

“The mother didn't die of cancer, Alejandro. She was poisoned.”The storm outside continued to rage, but the ballroom was now empty of its wealthy guests, leaving only the police, the crime scene investigators, and the shattered remnants of the Ruiz and Villa-Lobos families.
Don Roberto sat quietly at a side table, his head buried in his hands, appearing to be a broken father mourning his youngest son. Alejandro stood by the window, staring out into the dark night where the police lights flashed red and blue against the wet cobblestones.
Detective Ramirez approached Alejandro, a solemn expression on her face. "Mr. Ruiz, we have taken Sofia and the baby to the local hospital to be examined. They are safe now. But we found something in the mother's medical files that we seized from the Villa-Lobos estate."
Alejandro turned, his eyes hollow. "What is it?"
"The girl, Sofia, was right about her mother, Elena, working for the Villa-Lobos family," the detective said, flipping through a folder. "But she was wrong about how her mother died. Elena didn't die of cancer."
Alejandro frowned. "What do you mean? Sofia said she died of sickness because Valeria stopped paying the bills."
"Elena's toxicology report from the hospital autopsy came back just an hour ago," Detective Ramirez said, her voice dropping to a whisper. "She died of a massive overdose of ricin. A highly toxic poison. It was disguised as her chemotherapy medication. Someone wanted her dead, and they wanted it to look like natural causes from her illness."
Alejandro felt a chill run down his spine. "Valeria... she must have poisoned her to keep her quiet."
"That's what we thought," the detective said, her eyes shifting toward Don Roberto, who was still sitting silently across the room. "But Valeria was in Mexico City on the day the poison was administered. Her flight records and security footage place her hundreds of miles away. However, we did find a large wire transfer made to Elena’s bank account the day before she died. A transfer of five million pesos."
"A payoff?" Alejandro asked.
"Yes. But it didn't come from Valeria's account," Detective Ramirez said, her voice deadly serious. "It came from a secret offshore account registered under the name of Ruiz Holdings. It came from your family's company, Alejandro. Specifically, from an account that only your father, Don Roberto, has access to."
Alejandro felt the room spin. He slowly turned his head to look at his father.
Don Roberto did not move. He remained seated, his hands still covering his face, but his shoulders were no longer shaking with grief. They were tense, rigid, and still.
"Father?" Alejandro called out, his voice trembling. "Father, what is she talking about?"
Don Roberto slowly lowered his hands. The look of grief on his face had vanished, replaced by the cold, calculating expression of a man who had ruled his empire with an iron fist for forty years.
"You always were too soft, Alejandro," Don Roberto said, his voice flat and emotionless. "You lack the killer instinct required to keep this family on top."
"What did you do?" Alejandro demanded, taking a step toward him, his fists clenching at his sides. "Did you know? Did you know about Valeria and Mateo?"
"Of course I knew," Don Roberto sneered, rising to his feet with a terrifying calm. "I knew before they even started their little affair. I am the one who encouraged Valeria to seduce Mateo in the first place."
Alejandro’s breath caught in his throat. "You... what?"
"The merger was never about Valeria's family," Don Roberto explained, adjusting the cuffs of his expensive suit. "The Villa-Lobos empire was failing. They were bankrupt, but they hid it well. I knew that if you married Valeria, we would inherit their debts. But if Mateo married her, and they had an heir, we could use a legal loophole in their family charter to seize their entire land mass without taking on their liabilities."
He walked slowly toward Alejandro, his eyes cold and lifeless.
"But Mateo was weak. Just like you. When he found out Valeria was pregnant via a surrogate, he got cold feet. He wanted to confess everything to you. He wanted to ruin the entire plan. So, I told Valeria to handle it."
"You told her to kill him?!" Alejandro screamed, his voice echoing off the walls.
"I told her to make sure he didn't speak," Don Roberto corrected him coldly. "I didn't think she would be stupid enough to dump him in our own well. But Valeria always was a bit dramatic."
"And Elena?" Alejandro choked out. "The housekeeper? The mother of that poor girl?"
"Elena saw Valeria dump the body," Don Roberto said simply. "She came to me, begging for money to leave the country. I paid her. I gave her five million pesos. But a woman like that... she can never be trusted. The poison was a necessary precaution to protect the family name. But I didn't realize she had a daughter who knew where the baby was."
He looked at Alejandro with a twisted, patronizing smile.
"So you see, my son, this was all for you. To ensure that the Ruiz name remains the most powerful in the country. Now, the police have Valeria. She will go to prison for Mateo’s murder. We will adopt the baby, the rightful heir to the Villa-Lobos lands, and we will control everything. It is a perfect victory."

Alejandro stared at his father, realizing with a sickening horror that the man who raised him was a far worse monster than Valeria could ever hope to be.
"No," Alejandro said, his voice shaking with a fierce, quiet rage. "It’s not a victory. Because I’m going to destroy you."
