Chapter 3 - The Queen of Glass Towers

High above the glittering skyline of downtown Dallas, the penthouse office of Vanguard Global Tech looked out over a sprawling empire of glass and steel.

Victoria Sterling swirled an expensive vintage scotch in her crystal tumbler, watching the city lights twinkle below like fallen stars. At fifty-eight, she was a titan of industry—ruthless, untouchable, and perpetually several steps ahead of anyone who dared challenge her.

Her private intercom buzzed sharply.

“Speak,” she commanded, her voice like crushed ice.

“Ma’am, we have a catastrophic failure,” her chief of security’s voice crackled through the speaker, laced with panic. “Caldwell Sterling Motors. Mason Caldwell was arrested thirty minutes ago. And Marcus Vance has been detained by federal agents.”

Victoria’s hand paused mid-swirl. The ice cube clinked against the crystal. For the first time in a decade, a flicker of genuine shock crossed her perfectly sculpted features.

“Detained? How? The software leak was supposed to take months to trace.”

“It wasn't Mason or Marcus who cracked the firewall, ma’am,” the voice stammered. “It was a kid. Eleven years old. Julian Carter’s son, Eli.”

Victoria slammed the glass down onto the marble desk, splashing amber liquid across the surface.

“An eleven-year-old boy dismantled a three-year corporate espionage operation in a single morning?” she hissed, her composure instantly returning, replaced by a cold, calculating malice. “Find out where he is. If he has access to the master archives of Julian’s original project files, he possesses the quantum encryption keys to every autonomous patent we’ve spent billions trying to steal.”

“What should we do, ma’am? Send a team?”

“No,” Victoria smiled, a terrifying, predatory expression. “If we strike openly, the federal investigators crawling all over Caldwell Motors will trace it straight back to our doorstep. Instead, we use the legal trap we laid two years ago.”

She walked over to a secure wall safe, spun the dial, and pulled out an old, yellowed contract stamped with a notary seal.

“If Eli Carter legally owns his father's shares, then under section 14-B of the corporate merger acquisition act signed by Henry himself, any unverified minor holding a controlling interest must pass an independent federal competency audit within forty-eight hours—or forfeit management control entirely to the board's largest external stakeholder.”

She looked out at the Dallas skyline, her eyes narrowing.

“And guess who owns fifty-one percent of the subsidiary debt holding those shares? Vanguard.”
