Chapter 4 - THE TRAITOR WITHIN

The heavy metal trapdoor groaned as it lifted automatically from below, releasing a draft of cold, recycled air mixed with the chemical tang of electronic cooling fans and fresh coffee.

Alejandro drew his pistol in a fraction of a second, stepping in front of Valeria and Mateo with his body forming an absolute shield. His dark eyes narrowed into slits of pure fury. In his world, betrayal was a capital offense, but finding an unauthorized, high-tech bunker hidden beneath his dead wife’s bedroom meant something far worse: an enemy had been living inside his fortress, watching him every single day.

"Stay back," Alejandro muttered, his voice cold enough to freeze blood.

He kicked the trapdoor all the way open. A steep, narrow spiral staircase made of brushed steel descended into the absolute darkness below.

From the depths of the underground bunker, a soft, rhythmic clicking sound echoed upward—the distinct clatter of computer keys.

"Who’s down there?" Alejandro roared, his voice shaking the walls of the north wing. "Show yourself or I empty every magazine I have into this hole!"

The typing stopped.

A slow, heavy sigh drifted up the stairwell, followed by the sound of leather shoes stepping onto the metal stairs.

A figure emerged from the shadows into the faint beam of Alejandro’s flashlight.

It was a man in an immaculate gray suit, his silver hair neatly combed, holding a gold-plated fountain pen between his fingers.

It was Licenciado Héctor Morales.

Alejandro’s chief legal counsel. The man who handled all his legitimate business fronts, his offshore accounts, and his political bribes. The man who had sat at Alejandro’s dining table, eaten his food, and mourned beside him at Elena’s funeral.

"Héctor?" Alejandro’s voice cracked, not with fear, but with absolute disbelief. "You? You built a surveillance bunker under my wife's bedroom?"

Héctor did not look panicked. In fact, a faint, chilling smile touched the corners of his thin lips. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and calmly leaned against the doorframe of the bunker.

"Good evening, Alejandro," Héctor said smoothly, his tone as casual as if they were discussing a real estate contract. "I must admit, I didn't expect you to find this tonight. I thought for sure another elite nanny would run away crying within forty-eight hours, just like the previous eighteen."

Mateo let out another terrified shriek, burying his face deeper into Valeria’s chest, his small body trembling violently.

"You..." Alejandro whispered, the barrel of his 9mm rising until it was pointed directly between Héctor’s eyes. "You traitorous bastard. Every camera, every wiretap, every piece of intelligence on my operations... you’ve been selling it to the Sinaloa cartel, haven't you?"

Héctor chuckled softly, shaking his head. "The Sinaloa cartel? Oh, Alejandro, you always think too small. Drugs are messy. Construction is tiring. I didn't just sell your information to rival cartels."

Héctor took one slow step upward, his eyes shifting past Alejandro to lock onto the trembling four-year-old boy in Valeria’s arms.

"I sold your entire empire," Héctor continued, his voice dropping into a sinister purr. "And do you want to know the best part, Alejandro? I was the one who set up the ambush that killed your wife."

Alejandro’s entire world stopped spinning.

The color drained completely from his face. His finger tightened on the trigger, the hammer of the gun cocking back with a sharp, lethal click.

"You..." Alejandro choked out, his voice trembling with a rage so deep it transcended human speech. "You killed Elena?"

"She found out what I was doing," Héctor said casually, shrugging his shoulders. "She saw me downloading the financial ledgers on her laptop two years ago. So, I arranged a little welcome-home present for her car. Unfortunately..." Héctor’s eyes flicked to Mateo with a cold, hateful glare. "...little Mateo here was sitting in the back seat and looked right out the window. He saw everything. That’s why the poor boy wouldn’t stop screaming. He knew the monster who killed his mother was walking around inside his own house every single day."

Valeria gasped, her hands tightening protectively around the little boy.

Alejandro didn't hesitate anymore. His finger began to squeeze the trigger.

"Say goodbye, Héctor," Alejandro snarled.

Bang.
