Chapter 5 - THE BULLET AND THE BACKUP

The deafening roar of the gunshot shattered the quiet stillness of the north wing, sending plaster dust flying from the ceiling.

But Héctor Morales did not fall.

At the exact millisecond Alejandro pulled the trigger, a heavy steel security door slammed shut from inside the bunker wall, blocking the bullet with a loud, metallic ping. The slug flattened harmlessly against the reinforced alloy, dropping to the floor with a dull clatter.

"Did you really think I’d leave myself unprotected in my own command center, Alejandro?" Héctor’s voice echoed through a hidden intercom speaker, dripping with arrogant amusement. "Your empire is already dismantled. The federal police are twenty minutes away with a sealed warrant, and my offshore servers have already transferred every single cent of your liquid assets to accounts in the Cayman Islands."

Alejandro slammed his fists against the steel door, shouting curses that could strip the paint off the walls. He fired three more rounds into the alloy, but it was useless—the bunker was built to withstand military-grade explosives.

"Mr. Ríos! Stop!" Valeria yelled, grabbing his arm. "Shooting the door won't help! We need to get out of here right now! He said the police are coming!"

Alejandro stopped, his chest heaving, his dark eyes bloodshot with pure fury. He looked down at Mateo, who was crying silently now, his tiny fingers clutching Valeria’s dress.

In the criminal underworld, Alejandro Ríos was a king. But right now, standing in the dark hallway of his own betrayed mansion, he realized he had been checkmated. If the federal police arrived and found him standing over a secret high-tech bunker with a smoking gun, they would arrest him, lock him away for life, and leave Mateo completely defenseless against Héctor and his network.

"The service exit," Alejandro muttered, grabbing Valeria’s elbow with a firm, urgent grip. "There’s a tunnel behind the kitchens that leads to the outer perimeter road. Move! Now!"

They didn't run toward the grand staircase. Alejandro led them down the narrow, back-of-house service steps, moving with the tactical precision of a man who had survived a dozen assassination attempts.

As they burst into the cavernous kitchens, Doña Socorro stood frozen by the pantry, her eyes wide with shock.

"Mr. Ríos! The front gates! The federal police—they just rammed the security barrier!" the housekeeper cried out, pointing frantically toward the courtyard.

Flashing red and blue lights painted the high marble walls of the mansion in a frantic, strobe-like rhythm. Sirens wailed through the night air of San Pedro Garza García.

Alejandro didn't hesitate. He grabbed a heavy set of master keys from the wall hook, unlocked the hidden pantry panel, and shoved Valeria and Mateo into the dark, damp concrete tunnel that stretched out beneath the estate.

"Run straight for three hundred meters," Alejandro instructed, handing Valeria a heavy leather pouch stuffed with cash and a secure satellite phone. "At the end of the tunnel, you’ll find a black armored SUV. Drive out of the city. Go to the safe house in Monterrey."

Valeria stopped, her eyes wide with disbelief as she clutched Mateo tightly. "What about you? You can't stay here and fight an entire police battalion!"

Alejandro looked down at his son. For the first time in two years, Mateo reached out his tiny hand and touched his father’s cheek, wiping away a streak of sweat and soot.

"I have to clean up my own mess, Valeria," Alejandro said softly, a grim, melancholic smile touching his lips. Then he looked at the young maid with profound respect. "Thank you for saving my son. Now... please keep him safe."

Before Valeria could reply, Alejandro slammed the hidden pantry door shut, locking it from the inside, leaving them alone in the dark subterranean tunnel as the sound of boots and shouting echoed through the mansion above.
