Chapter 10 - Dawn of a New FamilyThe smoke cleared over the El Sauz bridge as state police and federal marshals swarmed the two mercenaries, pinning them to the gravel before they could even reach for their secondary weapons.

I didn't wait.
I sprinted toward the thermal carrier box resting on the ground, dropped to my knees, and flung the lid open.
Mateo and Lucía stirred, blinking against the sudden rush of cool air, letting out a soft, synchronized squawk of protest.
"I've got you. I've got you," I choked out, tears finally breaking free, streaming down my face as I scooped both babies into my arms, pressing them against my chest. They were warm. They were safe. They were alive.
"Doctor Rivera!"
I looked up. The commander jogged over, flanked by two medics who immediately stepped in with portable oxygen support for the twins.
"Are the children alright?" the commander asked, breathing heavily.
"They're safe," I whispered, burying my face in the soft blankets. "How... how did you know the exchange was going to be here?"
The commander smiled faintly, wiping dust from his jacket. "We didn't. Not until you synced the USB drive to your cloud storage before leaving the hospital. The backup file automatically routed an encrypted GPS beacon to our tactical command unit. You walked right into their trap as bait, Doctor... but you gave us the exact coordinates we needed to catch them red-handed."
I looked back at the empty, desolate road stretching out toward the horizon.
It was over.
Vance’s empire of corruption had collapsed like a house of cards. The federal indictments were already signed, the corporate assets frozen, and the dark shadow that had haunted Mariana for eight long years was finally locked behind bars where it belonged.
Two days later.
San Gabriel Civil Hospital was quiet.
I sat in the recovery room chair, holding a warm cup of coffee while watching Sofia sleep peacefully on the hospital bed next to the neonatal crib where Mateo and Lucía were resting comfortably.
The door opened softly, and Lupita walked in, holding a stack of legal documents. "Doctor," she whispered with a soft, tired smile. "Social services just finalized the emergency guardianship paperwork. Permanently."
I looked down at the papers, tracing my finger over my name listed as the legal guardian and father of Sofia, Mateo, and Lucía Morales.
Sofia stirred, her big amber eyes blinking open as she stretched like a small cat. She looked around the room, then straight at me.
"Are we going home today?" she asked, her voice soft and steady.
I smiled, standing up and reaching out my hand for hers.
"Yeah, Sofia," I said, my heart overflowing with a fierce, unbreakable love. "We're going home. All of us."
May you like
She looked at my hand, then up at my face, and for the very first time...
She smiled.
