Chapter 6 - The Lobby ShowdownThe words hung in the air like a live grenade with the pin pulled.

Victor Vance’s polite smile didn't falter, but his eyes narrowed into two venomous slits. The federal agents shifted uncomfortably, their hands dropping closer to their tactical belts.
"Dr. Rivera," Henderson stammered, stepping between us. "Have you lost your mind? Mr. Vance is a primary benefactor of this institution! You cannot make wild accusations—"
"They aren't accusations, Dr. Henderson," I interrupted, pulling out my smartphone. I had synced the USB drive contents to my cloud storage the second I plugged it into my office computer. "They're medical records. Financial ledgers. And video evidence of illegal clinical trials conducted on vulnerable mothers in this exact county, funded by Vance Enterprises."
Vance’s face hardened. The mask of the benevolent billionaire cracked, revealing the ruthless monster underneath.
"Seize his phone," Vance commanded the federal agents, his voice dripping with venom. "He is tampering with classified corporate data and obstructing a legal child-welfare proceeding."
The two agents lunged forward.
"Don't touch me!" I shouted, stepping back, holding my phone high. "Step back, or I broadcast the video right now to every news outlet in the state!"
The agents hesitated, looking at Vance for confirmation.
Vance laughed—a dry, humorless sound. "You think a video on your phone protects you, Daniel? You think anyone will believe a sleep-deprived ER doctor having a mental breakdown over a dead ex-girlfriend?" He stepped closer, lowering his voice so only I could hear. "You have no idea what I built, and you have no idea how easily I can erase you, your daughter, and those two babies."
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the ER lobby burst open.
"Stop right there!" a sharp, commanding voice rang out.
A dozen state police officers marched in, led by the very same commander who had investigated Mariana’s house the night before. Behind them walked two state prosecutors in crisp suits.
The commander held up an official arrest warrant, flashing it directly in front of the federal agents.
"Victor Vance," the commander announced, his voice ringing through the lobby. "You are under arrest for corporate conspiracy, illegal human experimentation, and the targeted harassment of witness Mariana Morales."
The lobby erupted into chaos.
Patients gasped. Nurses whispered. The federal agents froze, their authority instantly neutralized by state police backed by a superior warrant.
Vance’s face drained of color. For the first time, panic flickered behind his cold eyes. He looked at the police, then back at me, his jaw clenching so hard I thought his teeth would shatter.
"This is a mistake," Vance hissed as two officers stepped up on either side of him, grabbing his arms. "You are making a catastrophic mistake!"
"Tell it to the judge," the commander said, snapping handcuffs onto the billionaire's wrists.
As Vance was dragged toward the exit, he turned his head, locking his blazing, hateful gaze on me.
"You think you won, Daniel?" he shouted over the noise of the crowd. "Mariana knew everything! And now that she’s dead, you'll never find the rest of the files! You're sitting on a ticking time bomb!"
The doors swung shut behind them, leaving a heavy, stunned silence in the lobby.
I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for a lifetime. My legs trembled.

"Doctor?" Lupita whispered, grabbing my arm to steady me. "Are... are we safe?"
"I don't know," I said, looking down at my phone screen, where the encrypted video file was still waiting to be played. "Not yet."
