Chapter 5 - The Hidden USB DriveDawn broke over San Gabriel, bleeding a sickly orange light through the hospital blinds.

I hadn't slept a wink. After Vance left, I spent the remaining hours searching through Mariana’s personal effects collected by the paramedics. Her clothes had been bagged, tagged, and thrown into a biohazard locker in the basement.

Risking suspension, I picked the locker lock at 6:00 AM.

Deep inside the lining of Mariana’s torn, blood-soaked jacket, tucked inside a hidden velcro pocket, I found it: a small, black cryptographic USB drive.

Now, sitting in the dim glow of my office computer, the drive plugged into my port, I stared at a directory containing three files:

Vance_Corp_Blackmail_Ledger.pdf

Clinical_Trials_Phase1_Coverup.mp4

Sofia_Birth_Certificate_Sealed.pdf

My hands hovered over the mouse. My heart hammered against my ribs.

Before I could click the video file, the door to my office slammed open.

Lupita stood there, breathless and wide-eyed, clutching a phone in her trembling hand.

"Doctor! You need to come to the lobby right now!" she gasped.

"What is it? Did something happen to Sofia?"

"No, Sofia is still sleeping. But... there are federal agents downstairs. And social services. And... and a court order."

My blood ran cold. I slammed my laptop shut, ripping the USB drive out and shoving it deep into my pocket.

"A court order for what?" I demanded, striding past her.

"For the custody of Sofia, Mateo, and Lucía," Lupita said, running to keep up with my long strides down the corridor. "They claim child services received an anonymous tip that the minors were abandoned by an unstable relative and that the hospital is harboring them illegally. And... Doctor, the petitioner listed on the emergency custody injunction... it’s Victor Vance."

He didn't waste time. He made his move before the sun was even fully up.

When I burst into the main lobby, the scene was a war zone.

Two men in dark suits bearing federal badges were standing by the reception desk, flanked by hospital security. At the center of the room stood Victor Vance himself, wearing a pristine grey trench coat, talking calmly to the hospital administrator, Dr. Henderson.

"Dr. Rivera!" Henderson called out, looking flustered and anxious as she saw me approach. "Thank goodness. Mr. Vance is here representing a private philanthropic trust that wishes to take immediate custody of the orphaned children found last night. He has court-stamped emergency papers."

Vance turned toward me, a sickeningly polite smile on his lips.

"Good morning, Daniel," Vance said smoothly, stepping forward. "Let's not make a scene in front of the patients. Hand over the children, and we can all pretend this was just a regrettable misunderstanding."

The lobby went dead silent. Dozens of patients and nurses stared at us.

I reached into my pocket, my fingers wrapping around the black USB drive. I looked past Vance, straight at the federal agents.

"You want the children?" I said, my voice echoing across the marble floor, cold and steady. "You'll have to get through me first. And before you do... let me show everyone in this room what Mr. Vance's 'charity' is really funding."
