Chapter 5 - The Smoking GunInside the safe lay a stack of old cassette tapes, a journal bound in cracked leather, and a sleek, modern flash drive alongside an older magnetic diskette.

Emily reached past the tapes and pulled out the leather journal. She opened the first page, her mother’s handwriting instantly recognizable.

"Read it," Daniel urged, kneeling beside his daughter.

Emily’s voice trembled as she read aloud:

"If you are reading this, it means Arthur found us, or the truth finally caught up. I didn't steal the money. I didn't leak the files. The night before the demo, I walked into the lab at midnight to run a final diagnostic. I caught Arthur Sterling downloading our core architecture onto an external drive. When I confronted him, he threatened to frame me, ruin Claire, and ensure neither of us ever worked in tech again. He had the board in his pocket. I didn't have a choice. I ran to protect Claire from taking the fall with me."

Claire covered her mouth with her hand, a strangled sob escaping her throat. Twenty-four years of guilt—of believing her best friend had betrayed her—shattered into dust.

"There's more," Emily whispered, picking up the flash drive and the old diskette. "Look at the label on the diskette."

Claire squinted in the dim attic light. Written in Hannah's precise, elegant handwriting were the words: Sterling Global - Audio Backup & Financial Audit (1998).

"It's a recording," Claire realized, her eyes widening with shock and triumph. "She recorded their confrontation."

"And the flash drive?" Daniel asked.

"It contains the complete, unencrypted source code of original Aster," Emily said, a fierce, vindictive smile spreading across her face. "Along with digital signatures proving Arthur Sterling transferred the stolen files from his own personal administrative terminal."

Claire stood up, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. The CEO was back, but this time, she was armed with absolute truth.

"Pack it up," Claire said, her voice ringing with icy authority. "We're going back to Seattle. Arthur Sterling's empire is about to burn."
