The lawyers and federal investigators were gone. Only Claire, Daniel, and Emily remained.
On the table sat the old Polaroid of Claire and Hannah, now resting beside a brand-new corporate blueprint bearing the joint logos of Whitmore Aeronautics and Mercer Sensors.
Daniel looked across the table at Claire, a quiet, weary smile touching his lips. "So... I guess the acquisition is officially off?"
Claire laughed—a real, bright, unburdened laugh that she hadn't felt in twenty-four years. "Not an acquisition, Daniel. A merger. On our terms."
Emily smiled, fingering the silver star pendant resting against her blouse. The chipped corner no longer looked like a flaw; it looked like a badge of survival.
