Chapter 2 - THE GHOST FROM CAMBRIDGE"Dad," Ethan whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of confusion and rising panic. "What is he talking about? Who is she?"

Richard didn't answer his son. He couldn't. His gaze was locked onto mine, filled with a sudden, desperate terror. He took a half-step backward, nearly tripping over the heavy oak base of his podium.

"Twenty-eight years ago," I said, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings, "before the Whitmore empire was built on corporate buyouts, aggressive hostile takeovers, and political lobbying, there was a small tech startup in Cambridge called Aether Systems. Do you remember it, Richard?"

The color drained completely from Richard's face. He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost walk out of a graveyard in broad daylight.

"You're... you're dead," Richard muttered, his voice barely audible, though the microphone picked up every trembling syllable. "The explosion... the fire in the lab..."

Murmurs erupted through the ballroom. Heads turned. Reporters from the Chicago Tribune and the Wall Street Journal, invited by the Whitmores to document high society's wedding of the year, instantly reached for their phones and notebooks.

"Ah, yes," I said, stepping forward until I was standing at the edge of the elevated stage, looking down at the silver-haired patriarch. "The convenient fire. The tragic accident that supposedly wiped out the lead software architect, her research, and her patents just three days before the company went public. The fire that allowed a junior partner named Richard Whitmore to take sole ownership of proprietary algorithms worth billions of dollars."

Claire let out a sharp gasp, covering her mouth with her hand. "Mom... what are you saying? You were a seamstress... an accountant... you worked at the bookstore..."

"I worked everywhere, sweetheart," I said softly, glancing briefly at my daughter with a warm, reassuring smile before turning my icy gaze back to Richard. "Because when a man steals your life, your identity, and your life's work, and leaves you for dead with a newborn baby in your arms, you do whatever it takes to survive. You change your name. You hide in plain sight. You build a quiet, invisible life just to keep your child safe from men like him."
