Chapter 6 - THE ARREST IN THE BALLROOMBefore anyone else could speak, heavy footsteps echoed at the double doors of the ballroom. Four federal agents in dark suits strode into the room, led by a stern-faced woman with a badge identifying her as Special Agent Miller.

"Richard Whitmore?" Agent Miller called out, stepping up to the stage.

Richard didn't move. He sat motionless in the leather chair behind the podium, staring blankly at the polished wooden surface as if he were looking into an abyss.

Agent Miller didn't wait for a verbal response. She stepped behind him, pulled his arms behind his back, and the harsh click of steel handcuffs echoed loudly through the silent, packed ballroom.

"You have the right to remain silent," Agent Miller recited crisply. "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

As federal agents led the fallen billionaire down the central aisle—past the politicians who suddenly looked very interested in their shoes, past the corporate lawyers who were already drafting their dissociation statements—Richard raised his head. His eyes met mine one last time. There was no arrogance left in them. Just a hollow, echoing despair.

He had tried to humiliate a mother to elevate his own ego. Instead, he had pulled the pin on a grenade that blew his entire legacy to atoms.

"Take him away," Director Vance instructed quietly.

The double doors swung shut behind them, cutting off the view of the disgraced patriarch being escorted out of the Grand Riverton Hotel in handcuffs.

The ballroom remained suspended in a heavy, breathless silence. Four hundred elites of Chicago society stood frozen, realizing they had just witnessed the most spectacular public execution of a dynasty in modern history.
