Chapter 5 - THE BRIDE’S CHOICEClaire stood frozen in the center of the chaos. The wedding dress she had dreamed of wearing, the fairy-tale romance she thought she had entered into, the affluent family she had tried so hard to impress—all of it was crumbling into dust around her.

She looked at Ethan, who was standing amidst the ruins of the wedding cake, looking completely broken. Then, slowly, she turned her tear-filled eyes toward me.

"Mom," she choked out, her voice breaking. "You... you knew? All this time? You knew who the Whitmores were before I even met Ethan?"

I walked down the steps of the stage, crossing the polished hardwood floor until I stood right in front of my daughter. I reached out, gently wiping a stray tear from her cheek with my thumb.

"I didn't know until the engagement was announced, sweetheart," I said softly, my voice filled with endless maternal love. "The moment I saw his name in the papers, the memories came rushing back. I tried to warn you, remember? I told you that world wasn't what it seemed. But you were in love, and I wanted you to make your own choices."

"You let me walk right into a monster's family?" Claire whispered, her voice laced with pain.

"I let you see for yourself," I replied firmly, yet gently. "Because I raised a strong, intelligent woman. I raised someone who doesn't need a billionaire's last name to be worthy of respect."

Ethan pushed his way through the crowd of whispering guests and stopped in front of us. He looked at Claire, his eyes swimming with tears. "Claire, I swear to God, I didn't know anything about this. My father... I knew he was ruthless in business, but I never—"

"Ethan," Claire interrupted, her voice suddenly steadying. She reached up and unclipped the diamond necklace Richard had gifted her that morning—a family heirloom of the Whitmore dynasty—and placed it gently into Ethan's palm. "I love you. But right now... I need time. I need space to breathe. I need to know who I am outside of all this madness."

Ethan looked down at the diamonds, then up at Claire. He didn't argue. He nodded slowly, a tragic acceptance in his eyes. "I understand. Take all the time you need, Claire. I'll spend the rest of my life making amends for what my family took from yours."
