Chapter 5 - The UnravelingWith Ethan restrained and his mother sobbing hysterically in the corner, Marcus and the deputies moved efficiently. The heavy oak doors of the study were pushed wide open, and the digital safe embedded in the wood-paneled wall was quickly accessed using the master override key Marcus had brought from the district attorney's office.

Inside sat rows of flash drives, signed confessions from former business partners Ethan had betrayed, and the comprehensive financial blueprint of every fraudulent scheme Sterling Logistics had operated under his leadership.
Beverly dragged herself up from the chair, stumbling into the study with mascara running down her wrinkled cheeks. "Ethan... baby, what is happening? This has to be a nightmare. Call our lawyers! Call the board of directors!"
"The board of directors is already holding an emergency meeting, Mrs. Sterling," Marcus said without looking up from a stack of corporate certificates he was sliding into an evidence folder. "In fact, by the time the markets open at nine o'clock, they will have unanimously voted to strip Ethan of his title, expel him from the company, and hand over all remaining assets to the primary shareholder."
Beverly froze. "Primary shareholder? Who... who holds the controlling shares? We own sixty percent of the voting stock!"
"Seventy-four percent, actually," I corrected, stepping into the study and holding up a laminated stock certificate bearing my maiden name—Emily Vance.
Ethan stopped struggling against the handcuffs for a fraction of a second, his bloodshot eyes widening as he stared at the paper. "Vance... your last name... you're..."
"Thomas Vance’s daughter," I finished for him. "The little girl whose family your mother ruined twenty years ago. I spent three years studying your every move, learning every flaw in your personality, waiting for you to make the fatal mistake of underestimating me. You thought you married a victim, Ethan. In reality, you married your liquidation auditor."
Ethan let out a choked, hollow sound. The reality of what he had done—the sheer stupidity of his abuse, his arrogance, and his total blindness—finally crashed down on him like a tidal wave. He hadn't just lost his company or his house. He had handed his entire life over to the very ghost he thought his family had buried decades ago.

"You're insane," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking with utter defeat. "You lived with me... you let me... you slept next to me..."
"And every single night," I replied, my voice dropping to a chilling whisper, "I listened to you brag about how smart you were, while I wrote down the exact account numbers where you were hiding your stolen money. Sleep well, Ethan. Your trial starts in three months."
